Hector is totally mercenary. He's a 7or 8 yr old tom, and knows all the tricks, But I cannot detect an ounce of love there.....He's been with me around 7yrs.

No..........They are selfish creatures. They will scram you with their claws at the first chance. They are unpredictable. Unlike a dog. A dog is a faithful friend. Many dog's have saved human being's from death & danger. Can you imagine a cat saving someone from danger.........

I believe if he's with you for so long, he loves you a lot :)

Cat's just like people show love and affection differently than we sometimes want to. Cats and other animals do feel love for their human partners, but only in a little bit different way since they can't talk or say anything but making those cute sounds... and in the case of the kitty, it's "puurrr-mreoow" :)

It depends what you mean by love
If you mean would they give you a meal to stop you from starving, when they were starving themselves, then no.
But they are capable of a great deal of affection and loyalty - but as in any relationship, you get out what you put in.
Do you pet Hector even if you feel ill or are in a hurry? Do you stroke him when you feed him, talk to him and let him sleep next to you?
If not, is it just him that's not capable of love?

Oh of course they do, and definately to people! Especially toms - One of the cats next door to us gets absolutely miserable when his owner goes off on holiday, he refuses to eat. It's so sad!
And My cat Charlie, when no-one's up and about around the house, or if he thinks everyone's gone out he wanders around the house meowing frantically!

The female kitty doesn't seem to bother much though, I only notice when we've been off on holiday and when we're back she won't leave us alone for the whole day.

I have three cats - two toms and one queen - and no, I don't think that they have any love in their hearts. They know who feeds them and play up to them in order to be fed. If they didn't get fed they would find somebody that would feed them, or scavenge to feed themselves.

In addition to that, how can an animal, who causes untold pain when fornicating, have love in its heart? Everytime a tom cat mates they stick barbs into the queen. Not nice!!!!!

that he's stayed 7 years is a sign of love. some say that when cats wink they are blowing you a kiss. Cats are not daftly devoted like dogs they are independent and still a little wild.

Cats are great loving and caring pets. They have their own opinions (just like humans) and their own personality (just like humans). Maybe you cat isn't showing you love because you haven't either. But I'm pretty sure you have a tender place in his heart for you. But that's if you are kind to him!

If he has been with you 7 years, believe me, he absolutely adores you. Does he purr; rub around your legs, sleep by you, "talk" to you??? Even if he doesnt, if he didnt really love you, he wouldnt be there!!! Is he neutered??That makes a huge difference to the amount of affection he would show you (and he would live a lot longer)

The key word here is Tom...Toms have love in their heart, but that love is reserved only for the feline pussycat...cut the nuts and he will be all yours...he may b a fatso after a while, but he will b your fatso...not some pussys.
