my boyfriend asked me to marry him last night out of the blue. No ring or anything. i don't care if i didn't get a ring because i know he has the army to deal with. what should i do when people find out and they ask "to see the ring"? and is it fine to be without a ring for sometime of the engagement?

ring is pure bullshit, waist of money. be happy with a man u love and loves u. u should worry more about him leaving to the army than what other ppl think

I don't think so, however he may want to take you to get one together or maybe might be strapped for cash. Or possibly just so head over heels in love with you he hasn't enough time to get the ring. Just make some hints, then if he don't get the clue straight out ask. It's not really the value of the ring or pricing or that he gets you a ring at all. It's just the symbol that you too belong together that counts. If he doesn't want a ring then there could be reasons behind it, try to find out why. I have an allergic reaction to most medals, found this out when I had my ears pierced so try to gently find out why.

I never did get the custom of the man giving a ring to the woman. I much prefer the old Polish custom of both parties wearing a simple wedding band (i.e. no rock) on their left hand during engagement, then switching to their right hand at the wedding ceremony...

Well, actually I guess I do get it. It's supposed to be symbolic that he's going to provide for you or something (as opposed to the other way around). But is that really the kind of relationship you want???

To sum up: if you want to have rings, why not suggest a joint trip to get those wedding bands, next time he's in town? And in the meantime tell folks that that's your arrangement and there wasn't time to do the shopping trip before he had to leave for Texas...

When people ask about a ring, say that the two of you are going to pick one out together! I think it's better to pick out your own ring anyway, if you're going to wear something for the rest of your life you might as well get what you really like.

If the two of you are fine without a ring, then that's all that matters. And that will be one of the secrets you learn in marriage, "don't worry about what others think, as long as you two are in agreement". HOWEVER, do keep him accountable about that ring. If the ring is important, be sure to let him know...CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Sure. It's all about the commitment, anyway. Just tell them that although you found the right man, you haven't found the right ring.

If an expensive ring is too much to handle right now, consider getting a simple band from James Avery. They are around $40 in Sterling and last forever and are gorgeous.

lol Watch Moonstruck, with Cher & Nicholas Cage.
Actually, it's fine to tell folks you're engaged & that you'll be picking out a ring together soon. I don't think there's a law that says you HAVE to have an engagement ring.
Congratulations & best of luck!!

I like the 1st answer.....
When we got engaged we planned to shop for my ring for Christmas, but other issues arose meanwhile. My now-husband helped by buying me new furniture for my house instead of a ring for Christmas. I always just joke and say I sit on my ring every night!
Honey, I have the wedding band. that's the ring that COUNTS.

don't worry about the ring i guess, however, I'm not sure if I would take him seriously without it, or something that showed he intended to stand by what his words were. If people ask you to see the ring, say it was too heavy for my hand so i leave it at home

the ring is just a token of your marriage the marriage and love you have for each other is much more valuable then a ring could ever be if you are truly in love with him the ring shouldn't mean that much to you!!!!!!!!! congrats
