It sometimes takes him a while to say something. He practically drools over some fighters like Wladimir Klitschko. He'd rather sleep than watch fights that don't have enough action. I just don't get it.

Is comedy an integral part of watching boxing or is it something else?

I'll tell you why Larry MErchant is well liked. Because he is old school. He works well with play by play man Lampley, he works will with people who analyze like Steward or Foreman or Jones or Lennox (who I think is lame). Larry provides the color commentary. He's a boxing historian who actually knows his stuff. I've had the pleasure of meeting him before the Pacquiao/Marquez fight and he's a really nice, knowledgeable guy. He also stands up to fighters, not in a Jim Gray sort of way (who seems sleezy). I remember when Hopkins wanted to KO Merchant. I remeber when Oscar said that he knew Larry didn't like him much, but he had to like the way he (ODH) fought. And when Larry 'blanks,' it is comedic relief. Sometimes he rambles on and on about nothing--and it's funny. Lennox, sorry to pick on will sit there and............Hello Lennox are you still there? But PPV without Jim, Ray Torres, Michael Buffer, whoever analyzes, and MErchant would not be the same.

Larry Merchant is a class act. If you only new a thing about boxing you would show some respect. He gathers his thoughts in a methodical way and expresses his true feelings. He tells it like it is. Larry Merchant is to boxing like Chick Hearns was to the NBA.

oh how i want those 10 points for the best answer but alas batmen hits it right on the nail. larry merchant is an institution. take larry merchant out of boxing, you take a lil bit of the soul out as well. i do think in his old age, his gears are grinding a bit. but, i'd rather have him that way than not at all.

larry is wierd. I feel like half of what comes out of his mouth was written from someone else who signs his paycheck. Roy Jones sr. is way better as a commentator

I'm with you he takes so long to say anything, He tries to be funny and it doesn't work for him, I prefer Lennox Lewis punchdrunk dribble rather than Larry.

Another thing is that he is a booger eater! I have reliable sources telling me Merchant has done this nasty deed a few times at ringside
