Its made backwards - you put the pineapple on the bottom of the pan then add the cake mix and bake. Once done you turn the cake pan over to get the cake out and then the pineapples are on top creating a pineapple upside down cake. At this point depending on how you look at it you either bake it upside down or its end results are upside down.

when it bakes; here's my recipe:
PINEAPPLE UPSIDE-DOWN CAKE
1/2 cup margarine (1 stick) melted
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup walnuts (chopped)
1 can pinneapple slices (reserve syrup)
1 jar maraschino cherries
1 cup sugar
1 cup flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 eggs
1/4 cup pineapple syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla
Place the butter, brown sugar and walnuts in a frying pan and melt until it boils or bubbles. A cast iron pan works well because it's heavy and will be less likely to scorch. Place pineapples in the sugar mixture. Put cherries in the center of each pineapple. Cut the slices of pineapple into halves and line the sides of the frying pan with them (standing up on edge). In a bowl, combine sugar, flour, baking powder, salt and set aside. In seperate bowl, beat eggs until fluffy. Combine eggs, pineapple syrup, vanilla and
dry ingredients; mix until smooth. Pour batter into the pan being careful not to disturb the pineapples and cherries. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-45 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to stand for a few minutes to set and loosen the edges with a butter knife. Turn it upside down onto a serving dish.
Serve while still warm.

Yep. Once you cook it, you turn it over, so it's upside down.

OLD FASHIONED PINEAPPLE UPSIDE DOWN CAKE

3 cn 8 1/2 oz size sliced pine-
Apple in heavy syrup (12)
1/4 c Butter
2/3 c Light brown sugar, packed
1 c Unsifted flour
1/3 c Pecan or walnut halves
3/4 c Sugar
1 1/2 ts Salt
1/4 c Shortening
1/2 c Milk
1 Egg
1 c Heavy cream, chilled

Preheat oven to 350F. Drain the pineapple slices, reserving 2 T
syrup. In a heavy cast iron frying pan (10"), melt the butter over medium heat. Add brown sugar, stirring until the sugar is melted.
Remove from heat, and arrange 8 of the pineapple slices on the sugar
mixture, overlapping the slices slightly around the edge of the pan.
Put one slice in the center. Place the walnut or pecan halves in the
center of each slice of pineapple. Arrange around the inside edge of
the skillet the remaining pineapple, cut in halves. Put pecans or
walnuts in the center.

In a medium bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.Add
shortening and milk. Beat 2 minutes at high speed or until mixture is
smooth.Add egg and reserved 2 T of syrup. Beat 2 minutes longer.
Gently pour cake batter over pineapple in skillet. Spread evenly
being careful not to disarrange the pineapple.

Place on center rack of oven and bake 40-45 minutes, or until cake
springs back to light touch. After the cake is done, let the skillet
stand on a wire rack 5 minutes to cool just slightly, and then loosen
edges with a small spatula. Place serving platter over the cake, and
TURN UPSIDE DOWN. Shake gently, and lift off skillet.

Serve with 1 cup heavy cream whipped.

when one is prepping a pineapple upside down cake the up side is in the bottom of the pan. that's where you lay out your pineapples, cherries (optional for some), brown sugar, etc. before you pour your batter on top.

once the cake is baked & cooled, you flip it & the bottom is now the top - thus the reason for the name.

but i know you already knew this...

its called that because when you make this cake the pineapples are on the bottom. Then when its done baking you flip it upside down and the bottom becomes the top so the pineapples are now on top.

it is called that because for the most part after it is baked it is turned upside down out of the pans because you bake it with the pineapples and stuff on the bottom of the pan

it's upside when it's baked, but when you take it out of the pan, it's turned rightside up! Very yummy!
It's upside when baked so that the pineapple stays on the bottom (which becomes the top when you invert it!)
