I think Ron DeFeo, Jr. was just a twisted sociopath. As for the Lutzes, they recanted parts of the story after the truth leaked out that there was no haunting at the level they said (and had been written about). I have a link to the original crime story, and they have a portion about the Lutzes around chapter six.
