The reason I don't get enough sleep is because I'm in the Army and I work 14 hour shifts. I value my workout but if I'm not getting enough rest it all goes to hell anyway. Is sleep more valuable than working out in this case? For you military types P.T.

Yes you do need to do PT. Try a run on days that you are exausted so that at least you are working your cardio and when you aren't extreamly tired go to the gym and do some lifting. It is important for you to do P.T. because your body needs that as well in order to stay healthy. Just for an hour. Then go to sleep. You will probably get a better more productive sleep that way as well because now not only your mind is exhausted but so is your body.... you know how in basic you hit the pillow and didn't wake until the drill sergeant woke you... that is because you were truly exhausted... both body and mind. I don't know about you but I nor any of my battle buddies ever got sick in basic. Now you can go ahead and skip PT if you want to get flagged but I don't suggest it. ;)

Well being in the army myself...they are required to give you at least 6 hours of total sleep and 2 hours of continuous sleep. Since you are working 14 hours. you have 10 hours that you can play with....2 hours to workout and get ready (1hour of PT and hour to shower and things like that) and then 8 hours of sleep. I know it sucks sometimes to get only 6 hours of sleep, I tend to do the same myself, but if thats what you can get then you have to go with it. I tend to make up sleep on the weekends and days off. As far as not doing PT....you definitly want to keep up on that.

I Feel your pain it is hard for me to sleep too. Excersice has nothing to do with your lack of sleep, keep at it is good for you. You are probably Stress with your full workload. Talk to a Doctor, he can help you. Probably prescribe you some Ambien. It is important that you get some sleep so you can be more productive and have a friendly face. Seek Help!!
Last Time I heard the Army required to give you 4 hours of sleep.

I guess the Army does not think it is a one or the other. Ranger Training allows 2 hours of sleep a night & 11 hours of PTs with 1 hour to eat for 9 weeks. You survive but it is tough. Staying in shape will keep you in shape to stay alive, sleep is forgotten quickly.

fitness people usually recommend to work out at least 2 hours before you go to bed so you can allow your heartrate to slow down and muscles relax. I bet you could also talk to someone at a gym about ways to "cool down" after a work out so you can get a better night's rest. I bet there's a way to work out and sleep well if you try changing up your routine a bit. Good luck.
