The hospital will be able to help you with the social security issue along with applying for a birth certificate. If they don't, just call the local social security office. Unless you apply, they will not give you a number.
It might be helpful to choose a pediatrician first, especially if you have someone in mind. If not and you are satisfied with all of the hospital or clinics doctors, then there will be one on call or available for the birth. Your OBGYN is focused on you during and after delivery. The peds doctor will then tend to the infant.
Good luck and don't be nervous. No one can be perfect. Just remember that what is most important is love. :)

If you give birth in a hospital, the social security and birth certificate forms will be given to you, and the card will come in the mail 1-2 weeks later. If you do a home birth, you need to go to the local Social Security office and apply for one for your baby, as well as go to the state/county office to apply for the birth certificate.
Interview pediatricians beforehand if you can. If the baby is a boy the pediatrician will do the circumcision (if you choose for him to have this done) right there in the hospital. If you still haven't made a decision by the time you have your baby, contact your insurance company for referrals and just go to the one that has an open appointment that week. The on-call pedi at the hospital will see your baby for his/her first time and sign the hospital release papers.
Also remember to call your benefits company and add your child to the policy, and get a confirmation number. In some cases, they'll only add them temporarily for 30 days until you call again to confirm the addition. So make sure it gets done.
I found the best info at babycenter.com and signed up for the free weekly pregnancy newsletter. There are other sites that do this too, but this is the one I joined and one newsletter a week is enough. Good luck with everything!

The hospital will ask if you need help applying for a social security# for the baby, or you can go to the social security office and fill out paper work there, after the baby's born. It's entirely up to you. I guess it depends on how fast you need the SS#. A far as the pediatrician goes, I found a great Ped's doc before I went into labor and when I went into labor I had the nurse call him. He was there after my son and daughter were born, He gave them a clean bill of health and sent them home. It's up to you if you want a special Ped's doc to be there after you baby is born. Im sure a Ped's doc will be there to look at your baby when it arrives. Good Luck to you, hope everything turns out wonderful for you.

the hospital will help you get the social security number - they have all the paperwork there.
Yes, you should know your pediatrician ahead of time- most pediatrician want to meet you and "accept" you as a new patient so you should do this before your baby is born. After the birth, they will come to the hospital and check the baby too. If you don't have one, the hospital will "appoint" you someone so the baby can be checked and cleared to be released from the hospital. But it is best to have one already.
Good luck!

My wife is in pre-labor right now. Most hospitals have a pre-registration thing you can go to, where you see the birthing rooms, and fill out a lot of the paperwork before you actually go to the hospital. We have done it, and you should look into it- it really takes a lot of the stress off when you are actually going. They will tell you about the social security number at that orientation- we prefilled out most of the paperwork for our coming son's number already, we just have to complete it after he's born. As for the Pediatrician, you should probably get one before he is born. The Pediatrician comes to see the baby while you are still at the hospital. Since the Peditrician will be seeing your baby for the next several years, wouldnt you like to know everything about your baby, by seeing him or her right from the start!
Good luck to you!

Don't worry! The hospital will provide you with the necessary documents you'll need to get your baby a Social Security card and apply for a birth certificate (the one the hospital gives you is only a keepsake for the baby book)
Also- It's a good idea to know who your pediatrician will be, but not necessary for he/she to be there. You wil just take your baby to a 2 week check up at the new pediatrician's office. Start looking now- just call different places, get advice from friends or post another question about good pediatricians in whatever area you live. You can meet with the Drs and see if you like them.

First off let me congratulate you on your new baby.:) About the SSN after you have your baby (before you leave the hospitol) you will be given paperwork to fill out. That will consist of afew things: the ssn, birth certificate, how to care for your infant and other stuff. All that will be explained to you and if you're not clear on what's being told to you ask more questions (no matter how stupid the question is-trust me on this i've asked the most stupidest Q's ever). They will answer the most rediculous Q's ever. And you really should have a pediatrician before you give birth, but you should also do a little research on some different ones...unless you have a family doctor that you already have..or....a doctor that you alreay know. You want to feel comfortable around that doctor.

Social Security numbers are automatically sent to you, however birth certificates are not. You should know before hand and they do not need to be there right after your baby is born. The nurses will take care of him or her, but if they tell you that they suspect a problem then you need to let you pediatrician know at the first visit. Exampl: The nurses thought that my son had a problem with his heart, nothing serious just an irregular beat, they took an x-ray and sent it home with us. When he had his first doctor's appointment I took it with me and told her what they said.

The hospital will give you the form to apply for the social security number. If you have not chosen your own pediatrician by the time your baby is born, the hospital has their own who comes in and checks out your baby before you go home!
Don't be nervous and congratulations !!! *hug*

1. SSN - the hospital most generally fills out all of that information for you and even mails it to the Social Security Administration for you. - All you have to do is sign where they (the hospital) tells you to sign. - I then takes a few weeks and it's mailed to your home.
2.Usually, the hospital where you deliver has pediatricians on call. I would research several pediatricians prior to your baby's birth, just to kind of get an idea of who you may want to provide medical care for your infant, but it's not necessary. I have 4 children, and I already knew with the last 3 who my pediatrician was going to be, but the on call dr. at the hospital took care of them during my stay there. Usually, you go back in to your regular pediatrician at 1 week for a check up.
