i know that a flat is like an apartment, but when i read books that are set in england it sounds like a flat is more prevalent than a house.
so, here in the states when you settle down to have a family, ideally, you are in a house...but it seems that in england flats are perfectly fine for families...

i hope i'm making my question clear!
if you don't understand, then i'll add more details!
thanks!

i get what you are saying, here in u.s its the same thing, that appartments are for families but they just like to be more appart from every1 else by living in their own building.. i have to say, i rather live in a flat than a house in its own. usually appartments ova here where families live is for people with lower income, yah its kinda confusing.. i used to live in northern europe and most people lived in appartments because of winter, and it is hard to maintain a regular house, it might be coz of the climate.. but maybe its probably because its really expensive since england is known for the highly expensive living there..

i hope that helped you coz i think that too is really confusing

Yes flats are basically apartments. People choose to live according to what they can afford. Most people are looking for space when they have children so these are usually houses. However, my flat is bigger than my friends house! It's really down to personal preference rather than there being some set ideal on where you should live when you have a family. Most people want to live in a decent area with good schools for their kids. If this means at the expense of having a house then that is a sacrifice many people are willing to take.

I was Stationed in England some years ago but I can definite tell you that flats are apts. I really enjoyed the country as I was there courtesy of the USAF and got to see much of the British Countryside. Also as I try to keep current with what is happening over there I see that 25 to 30 years haas made a big difference. when I was thre central heaating was a Luxury but now homes are better equiped. coal fires in the living room were the thing back then and a flue would carry the heat to other rooms ba convection as oppose to fan driven. All in all i can say i enjoyed the Country and I am hoping soon to go back B-4 my days end. Again its a beautiful country and if you go explore the small inns and pubs in the countryside

A flat is often a rental property, but not always an apartment. In the cities, most of the land and property technically belongs to te crown. Therefore, there is what would almost be like ground rent or condo fees here in the US. Even is a Brit owns a property, it is often still called a flat since the tradition of ownership by the crown extends ot this day.

Houses are a much more traditional abode than flats, although in many cities the appartment is prevalent. UK house prices have increased rapidly and flats are a more economical option. Houses are the norm though in most of the UK where families are concerned. What sort of literature have you been reading by the way?

kinda.. the thing is, in England, the cost of owning your own home is HUGE, especially in any city, so most people live in flats..... they also tend to be more like a single floor in a house, than what you think of as a North American apartment (in a larger building).

Hope that helps

I never heard of the word 'flat' used in the context of an apartment. A 'flat' in the US means a flat tire for a car. lol

Depends on the size of the flat. If it is smaller it wouldn't be so good for a family.
