What did you do to make them listen other than obidience school? I was hoping that this would be a phase and he will eventually get better, he is only 9 months old? Tell me your experience, when do they or do they get better?

Sorry to tell you but obedience school is the answer. The teach you how to train your dog. You could try to find a good book on dog training at your public library.

Coonhounds are bred to sniff, he is just doing what he was bred to do. Terriers dig, herding dogs will nip ankles (herd), sighthounds will run/chase, scenthounds will sniff. It is their natures.

Hounds are NOT easily trained and have minds of their own. I would get into a basic obedience class and use alot of treats. Hounds have to be more cooerced than trained.

Some Hounds are notoriously naughty and wild as puppies, although not sure about Coonhounds. Mine don't get out of their naughty phase until 2-3 years, and some never do.

Give his nose a job! Find tracking classes and work on a title! There is also a good tracking book out. You can find it at dogwise.com
