not only did they go to school for a highly trained skill, the machines they use aren't cheap. everyone thinks that when you go for an X ray and use those machines that its very costly, except IT IS COSTLY. those machines cost HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS. for you to pay $80 is peanuts when you look at the big picture. and their aren't millions of them like cars so they can't be mass produced, they are hand made. And that is why going to the dentist and any other type of doctor that has those types of machines is so expensive.
They're not trying to rip you off, in fact they are trying to give you teh best price THEY CAN AFFORD.

Dentists have huge costs of their own---rent, insurance, equipment and supplies, running an office with a full time staff--not to mention good dentists continually keep up with the latest in procedures and techniques--which means from time to time attending more training or subscribing to industry publications. Then there are association dues, and many are still paying for the hefty student loans they took out to pay for their education!
The cost of medical and dental care IS high to begin with--and many doctors and dentists do provide their services on a volunteer basis for clinics and charitable organizations, but thats a personal decision and not a requirement.

You need to find a dental clinic that works on a sliding scale based on your income. These are generally available in more populated towns and cities. Dentists from offices around the city take turns coming in and doing needed work on the poor and indigent. I took advantage of this in a poorer time. The work was pretty good and cheap, from a qualified dentist with another office in town. Look into it. Good luck.

You can't afford the dentist? Are you going there once a month. It doesn't cost $3000 every time you go. It's like $50-75 for a damn cleaning once every 6 months. Ever heard of insurance? You can get it on your own if you want. If you're really against paying the dental bills just knock out all of your teeth.

I used to believe that myth.... till I had children and they needed braces ....... and I saw all the time they spent readjusting those things all for the same price ... and came to wonder how they could make a living on such. ~ Rudy
PS: There are generally training places in most cities where new dentists that have acquired the education get a chance to practice ..... these tend to charge way way less as such practicums help them graduate.

we charge more as getting such treatment is more luxury . we agree that patient in acute agony of pain should be provided with most economical treatment as the patient has no option but to get rid of pain. but in cases where the treatment is optional, the patient is not compelled to get that treatment.

They are not a charity, they go to school for years to gain the knowledge that they have. If you want it done cheap, ask a buddy to help with his pliers and drill.
