Are you talking animal or child? In the USA if you hit your animal in public or anything such as that ( home) you could be prosicuted. For a child, maybe a good smack on the buttocks when misbehaving in public but DO NOT GO ANY FURTHER than that. Or someone will call the po po man on you and childrens services.

same rule of thumb - no mark no problem - but don't even get me started - society has parents so damn scared of correcting their children that the kids are now realizing whats up and walking all over many parents. I have always spanked my kids - DID ALL YOU HEAR THAT - SPANKED - NOT BEAT! - when my child gets to the point that they will not respect the authority that I need to effectively raise them then I have to get their attention. Why do you think God put extra padding there on the backside? - some rules for doing this - never spank when you are mad - never anywhere but on the buttocks - explain the reason to them - don't console them afterwards - and most important - be consistant. And for the rest of you who insist on telling me how to raise my kids - well I can't say what I want to here - so just butt out.

In England it is now illegal to hit your child so hard that it leaves a mark. If u live in America then i have no idea, But then why would u want to hit your kid, Its wrong and immoral and a way for usually stressed parents to express power and relive stress. And you know that saying an absolute power corrupts absolutely. Others may disagree with me but i have been the victim of bad child abuse. And that is what hitting ur child is. Sure it may be a hit now but could u control yourself if u lost ur temper completely. Who knows what could happen???

In the US there is the Child Protective Services anybody can call to report child abuse. If you do hit a child and someone calls CPS, you better have a really good explanation or they could take away your child. The key to child misbehavior is to have them understand that if they don't behave, you may not be their parent.

Theres a difference between smacking and spanking. If you slap your kid across the face and/or beat the crap out of your kid then it is wrong. I believe in spanking though. The child needs to know who is the boss. Why do you think there are so many rebellious kids out there? Because their parents never punished them and because everyone calls the cops on you if you spank your kid.

Your question concerns me, if you want positive reaction and that was meant to be funny, you were suppose to put a "lol" or a "he he" after wards. I am going to assume that you are joking.
