I don't live there, I live in Palermo. When I was in the military I had many occasions to travel to Sigonella. Are you about to be staioned there? It is a Navy base, not a town. There is a small town near there (Motta) where many military families live. It is also located near Mt Etna which is an acive volcanoe. The base itself is actually pretty nice. It has a new Exchange/Commisary complex as well as many facilities for recreation and health care. If you are going there, get to know the people of Sicily and you will probably make many lifelong friends. If you don't care to do that and you just hang around base all the time, you'll get bored eventually but at least the navy tries to make any military member's life more comfortable by all the MWR events ect. There is also brand new housing available but I am not sure how full they are.

Sigonella is a Naval Air Station in Sicily. It is surrounded by farmland. While the base is boring, there are MANY wonderful destinations within a days travel. Erice is home of Aphrodite's and Venus" castles. Palermo is beautiful, but be sure to pay BEFORE you ride in a horse-driven cart. If not, they'll try to charge for each person at the end. There is a wonderful travel agency on Sigonella that has cheap guided tours...in English. Go at least once and enjoy it all! Don't forget the Valley of the Temples!

I did reserve duty at Sigonella in 2000-2001 and had an awesome time. Sicilians are the friendliest people I have ever met as a group, and there are many unusual things nearby. Definitely check out the not too distant small city on Caltagirone, with its ceramics shops and 142 step staircase from city hall to a church on top. Take the cable car ride in Taormina, and the Valley of Temples near Agrigento. Most of all, immerse yourself in the culture, and you will have an unforgettable experience.

No. Sigonella is the name of a U.S. military base, not a town. However, there are a few thousand American soldiers who live at Sigonella.

Most do not find a visit there fatal, but official statistics are limited. Unfortunately, everyone who decides to stay there ultimately dies.
