They have special spray that you can use. Not very tasty, and it usually does stop them. Hopefully, before it is toooooo late.

There is a product out there called Bitter Apple.
You can get it at Fleet Farm, Petfood Warehouse, or at the vet's office or at just about any pet supply place.
This is the important part.
Have the cap off of the bitter apple and the bottle with you.
Catch the dog doing it (even if you have to set them up).
Go to the dog say in a firm strong voice LEAVE IT (don't yell or scream - be firm and strong).
Open the dogs mouth and start pumping in the bitter apple till the dogs starts gagging/coughing, then you know the dog is full.
If you don't keep pumping until the dog is full - you are not training your dog - you are teaching them to build up a tolerance for bitter aplple.
After that - spray the electrical cords in your house with bitter apple.
If you don't spray the dogs mouth - only the cords, you a flavoring it for them.
The dog relates the smell to the bad experience and stays away.
German Shephards are tough and smart.
Don't worry you won't have to drain the bottle in them usally 4-6 good pumps do it, and they will remember after two or three times.
Good luck.
p.s. make sure that you are walking them, and playing with them so they are not bored enough to make there own fun.

Please don't use hot sauce. If your dog gets it in his eyes he's in trouble.
There are products you can get for this, one group contain Bitrex and tast bitter, like the stuff you use to stop kids biting their nails. Another group contain citrus which dogs don't like. Treat the cables regularly with one of these and make sure they're unplugged when not in use.
At the same time make sure he has plenty of suitable chews available, give him a selection. If he's teething he may prefer the rubbery cables to a rock hard biscuit or chew. There are rubber chews you can get which are vanilla flavoured, he may prefer one of those. Or a squeaky toy. Anything to divert his attention.
After that you need to look into stopping him from this habit. At your local pet store you can buy training discs. Follow the instructions carefully because they're not as straightforwards as you'd think. If you get it right a shake of the discs when you catch him in the act will make him stop and think without him being hand shy or resenting you in any way - in fact after he stops chewing call him away and give him a chew.

hide the cables dummy. You should have dog proofed the house before you got the dog. Give the poor thing something like a raw bone to chew on to keep him occupied.

also your dog might be bored. Maybe it is time to do agility or flyball or even obedience. This breed needs to be worked, full stop.

Buy some 'get off my garden' spray - its basically citronella which dogs find really offensive. Just spray it on lightly. Alternatively fill an empty drink bottle with stones & shake it loudly everytime you see him/her going to have a chew, followed by a stern 'NO' command - should do the trick. Best thing really though is to simply fasten them altogether with ties out of harms way!

Geez! Your dog can have neurological or heart damage from getting electricuted. When you can't supervise your dog put him in a safe room or a crate until he grows out of the puppy behavior and can be trusted!

There are sprays like bitter apple that will help, but he still needs supervision because it may not stop it.

get bitter apple spray, from a pet store. spray the wires he chews with that. if he chews with the bitter apple spray, then it'll taste nasty and stop. but he's still got a little puppy in him, so he needs to chew on something. you can get some chew tastes and mild rawhides from the pet store, or even wal mart. and if he stills chews on the wires, still keep spraying the wires with bitter apple, but spray him a little with water, and punish him in a clampered space for about 15 min. grow the time of punishment if he still persists his chewing. if you have any other questions in specific about this issue, feel free and dont hesitate to email me at

after my german shepherd puppy licked the surge protector and got zapped, he never went near anything electrical again. that probably doesnt really answer the question, but be consistant in disciplining him away from the wires. Maybe scaring him with a noise when he goes near them could help.

if your german shepherd is anything like mine then none of the sprays will work mine just licks it off, try moving the cables to a safe place, my vet suggested not reacting to the behaviour cos if they think they can get a reaction from you they will keep doing it

hi i have a rottie with the same problem you just cant do anything with them apart from bare with it they will pass that stage aventually. but you can never be sure so always keep an eye on them or tie them up on a short lead so they cant get as far as the cables. daisy comes to work with us as we work for ourselves and when she is in the office she has to be tied to the office table furthest away from the wires
