I am curious to know what justifies the difference in the price tag

It depends on the model. The Lexus ES and Camry are based on the same mechanicals, which means that engines, transmissions, and suspension are shared, as are other major components. In addition the Lexus has:

Longer warranty and free maintenance
Higher grades of leather and real wood interior
Greater sound deadening and sealing
Higher end optional stereos (Mark Levinson vs JBL)
More standard equipment (bluetooth, etc)
Lexus nameplate (translates into higher resale value in the long run, better cachet if you care)
Luxury features as standard/options (xenon headlights, heated/cooled seats)

Reliability should be the same for the Camry and Lexus, the Toyota is already built to a very high standard but has more ordinary styling and furnishings.

If you are talking about the GS and IS, they are both built on more expensive RWD platforms and have no Toyota equivalents.

Mechanically they are the same. The Lexus has more sound deadening material and different interior features. For the most part they are the same. The Lexus costs more & the service costs much more (at a Lexus dealer) so I would buy a Toyota.

The Japanese figured out along time ago that us Americans are stupid and we pay more for IMAGE. Japan has made a fourtune on us with Acura (Honda) Lexus (Toyota) and Infinity (Nissan).

Buy the Toyota and enjoy the $5,000 saving, the top of the line Camry has most all of the features you find on an ES350.

Hope this helps

I have Lexus IS 300, it was very nice. I also got drove ES330 which is suppose to have the same engine as Camry V6. I also just test drive a new Camry V6 for my wife.

According to my experience, machanically there is no different between the ES330 and Camry V6 engine. However, the different is the interior design and tuning car suspension system which make the car quieter and smoother than Camry. The customer service of Lexus dealer is much better than average Toyota dealer.

After working for toyota as a mechanic for 14 years
I have seen the differences.
The diff is in the finishing of the interior as well as the electronic
controlling of the engine and transmission. Lexus has more attention to drivability= smoother shift /acceleration.

You should call a Lexus dealer and ask them. I did and he never gave me a straight answer. They have the same insides, but have an L on the front instead of a T. It kind of depends on how lazy you want to be: do you need the seat to move back when you get out of the car and then move back up when you get back in?

My understanding is the Camry and ES330 (or whatever the current model is) share the identical motor/transmission/chassis. So mechanically there is no difference.

Mechanicaly there is no difference. They both are made by Toyota. One just has more luxury features. And with that comes a higher price.

Just the bells and whistles. By that I mean features. And of course money.
