have your kids done this?

Question

my little boy is 2 1/2, hes just started this thing, whenever i ask him something or just say something to him he says "huh?" like he doesnt understand, no matter how many times i repeat myself he does this. just curious if all kids do this at this age.

My son is 2 1/2 and he does that TOO!!! Its SO annoying!! I hate it when he does that...every time I say something he goes, huh? with this look of confusion...Sometimes I wonder if he actually doesnt understand what im saying, or if he is just wasting time because he doesnt want to listen, he wants to play! I think it is their age...they dont call it the terrible 2's for nuthin!!

Yes. My son is almost 4 and he STILL does it. It's all about getting a reaction out of you- I know after I repeat myself so many times he will just start laughing at me for showing my irritation. It's gotten to be a game for my son! Because he's getting older I just cut him off after I say it for the 2nd or 3rd time. I tell him "Nope- if you're not going to listen to what I have to say, I'm not telling you any more."

my little girl is 2 and she can be looking right at me when i say something to her however she will still say huh? i think it just is habit at first and then when they see it annoys you they may do it for a reaction.because you know they are bright, they can sing all the words to barney dora or whatever cartoon they are in to plus repeat things you had really rather that they dont!!

Well your boy sounds just like my nephew and he's about the same age. So when we ask him something he'll just say huh? and keep on doing it every time we ask him a question.

Yes they seem to all do that at some point...they probably just pick it up after hearing someone else saying it all the time. I wouldn't worry about it unless he does it when he's older and he actually knows what he's doing...for now he probably just thinks "huh" is another way to say "what" :)

my daughter will be able to repeat back to me whatever it was I said, but she will still say "what you sayed?" (yes, she says sayed and not said) to me. It must be a phase that 2 year olds go through. I think they are just learning that converstaion has responses and is a two way street and they are trying out a response. I am sure like all phases, this one will pass as well - good luck!

Always remember that children REPEAT what they hear on a regular basis. I know my child starting say some of the oddest things, until I realized that it is him picking up my phrases. My guess is that he hears you or others in your family saying this rather familiar phrase and has in his infinite wisdom decided that is the one he will repeat over and over and over!

sounds like he learned a new trick. Keep in mind that so much of his environment is controlled for him. This can be a neat trick where he gets you to do a 'trick' for him.

try asking him to repeat what you said but beware: this is another possible new game that has potentially annoying outcomes.

Consider yourself lucky... my daughter just says "what, what you say mama, what?" over and over again!!! Even if I don't say anything... she is either hearing things or just trying to get my attention. Probably the latter, but still it can get quite obnoxious at times. I bet your son just doesn't want to hear what you are saying. If you think he can't hear you telling him no he probably thinks you will stop... just wait til they think that EVERY word you say is directed toward them. My daughter thinks that I'm always talking to her! I can't even have a conversation with an adult without her saying, over and over again across the room, "what, what you say mama, what?"

My niece did this as well, and on occasion still does. I would suppose it's do to emulation of adults, Her father generally never listens to her mother and replies with a "Huh?"
