I doubt if it was much different pre- or post-flood. Scientists say that there is not enough water on earth to have produced a flood large enough to cover the entire planet. The only thing which could have caused such a thing would have been a comet, and if it had been that, it would have superheated the Earth to the point that nothing could have survived. More likely, it was a local flood. It is believed that as ice melted after the Ice Age, the Mediterranian overflowed its banks, creating the seas to the east of it. This would have been a gigantic flood, and would have seemed large enough to cover the entire Earth. Also, don't forget that many species that we know now didn't exist in that area, so the ark wouldn't have had to be too big to accomodate "all the animals of the Earth," since Noah didn't know about the Americas, and probably didn't know a lot about animals in other areas.

An exact figure is not stated in the Bible. However, it does give clues as to an estimate -

Many centuries before the Flood, earth’s population had grown to such an extent that Adam’s son Cain was able to build a city, which he called Enoch. (Genesis 4:17) Down through the pre-Flood ages, a variety of industries developed. There were forges for “every sort of tool of copper and iron.” (Genesis 4:22) Doubtless these tools were used for construction, carpentry, tailoring, and agriculture. All these trades are referred to in the accounts of the earth’s earliest human inhabitants.

Accumulated knowledge would have made it possible for successive generations to develop such specialties as metallurgy, agronomy, rearing sheep and cattle, writing, and the fine arts. Jubal, for example, was “the founder of all those who handle the harp and the pipe.” (Genesis 4:21) Civilization developed extensively.

The flood is by historians estimated to have occured sometime around the time of a famous conqueror of the ancient world, Sargon, because the Sumerians have some ancient myths about great flooding, and the mountain in the Noah's Ark story is believed to be in the area of ancient Sumeria. So, before Sargon, but that would probably be the earliest estimate you will be able to find.

thousands I believe. I mean just think about it, adam and eve had their sons who had children upon children and they lived for hundreds of years, so there was definately a good size population before teh flood. Check the Bible if you have one to see how many stories take place between adam and eve and noah, and that should help you estimate how many people were there before the flood.

It didn't happen. It is a flood myth - most religions have one. You cannot take everything in the Bible as history or fact.
