i've heard it takes 21 or so days to create a habit...so I'm thinkin' that it could take around that time to destroy it. pick a safety focus...something healthy and productive you can turn to when you get a craving. also, an accountability person is very helpful--make sure it's someone you can trust and KNOW they will uphold you...someone you can handle being a li'l intrusive in your life. make sure you keep them updated. and when you get a craving, call them, let them know. then turn to your other focus and focus on that until the craving passes.

and good job and deciding to take this change. it's a big step and it's going to be hard, but stick to it because you'll come out the better in the end.

I don't know if the cravings ever really end. I was addicted to cocaine for years, it took me about two years to finally quit. I have now been clean almost 16 months and I still get cravings for it from time to time. I can now just ignore it by telling myself "look how far you've made it so far, do you really want to ruin it and that always works." As for cigarettes, I'm still trying to quit, was on the patch, which helped alot but was still craving a cigarette by evening so I haven't really quit yet am now down to 5-6 a day from the half a pack I used to smoke. What it all boils down to is "willpower" You have to be very stong of mind and body to stay away from drugs and cigarettes. Good luck to you and good for you for deciding you've had enough.

When you decide to want to end them, Good for you a great choice!!! You can get involved in a sport or activity and that often makes things fun to look forward to and keep your mind on the good stuff, For a happy life, you can also try gum chewing or some patches can help you also Hypnosis or seeing a psychologist often helps people.

It takes about 2 weeks for going through withdrawals from drugs. I would suggest that you go to some Narcotics Anonomous meetings.Just go a few times and listen to people talk and ask someone that you feel you can trust to be your sponsor. If you're serious about not using drugs, NA is your best bet.

They may never end completely.

I gave up smoking 6 months ago and whenever I'm in a stressful situation I feel like smoking. I have to tell myself its not worth it and I obey!

I think with time and positive self-talk you (and me) can stay clean!.

You have to give it time, if you did it very recently, you are going through withdrawls, give it time. Go work out or do something you like to do for fun. think about maybe going to thereapy or therapy groups for this.
