I found a dog yesterdat that was both abandoned and abused. I took her in because the the temp was 112 and I could not live with myself knowing she out there alone. I took her home and took her to the vet to get her shots. She is in heat right now and bleeding some. She seems so out of it and she just lays on her back every time we walk by. I am sure she is jsut submissive and scared. She has a huge laceration on her inner thigh. She wont ever go into the backyard. She seems scared of everthing. Does anyone have any advice to make her feel loved and cared for. My other dog has taken to her and seems to really like her.

You guys are so great. I am defietly keeping her and I named her Lady. I already made an appt to get her fixed. My other dog Kiya was also homeless when i got her but she was so friendly from the get go. I just saddens me that people could be so mean. Her laceration is not infected but it is big. Thank you for all your blessing and the advice.

I can definately understand your delema--animals in this world are totally vonerable to what we humans do to them--the abuses that we deal out to them simply through our neglect is hard to believe----You have done a remarkable thing here and you will be rewarded with love and loyalty for your efforts---I myself have saved a number of animals in my lifetime and have never regreted a single one that I've dealt with even considering the time and expense-----This dog KNOWS that yoiu have step up for her--and in no time --once she adapts to the surroundings and the 'flow' of the place--she will find a way to show you her appreciation---I have found homes for dogs and have kept dogs that were abandoned --- and almost always they do come around to a place where they are "part of the family" and seem to just gush with love (I think it has alot to do with the fact that they know that you saved them as well as knowing what they came from)----I for one am thankful for every single person in the world such as you--who go beyond what is the right thing to reach out to another one of God's creatures to make a difference

Lucky dog to find you! I'm sure you'll be patient and loving with her. It sounds like she was thrown from a moving car or something equally horrible. She has suffered a real traumatic event.
Your other dog will be a good stabilizing influence on her, and eventually she should become more cheerful and healthy. Keep the two together as much as you can. I would read up on dog behavior a bit in some specialized publications, because some strange behavior problems may surface in the future, even though you are doing a great job. Also, I would recommend getting her neutered.

It sounds like the dog is just scared right now. If the dog was abused it is probably just learning to trust you, that's why it's being submissive. Just keep showing it that you care by petting it and trying to play with it. The dog is probably not being itself because it's hurt. When it starts to heal it will be a little more social. You could always contact your local animal shelter and ask them for advice; I'm sure they advise a lot of people who adopt rescued or abandoned dogs.

Thats so wonderful there are still people out there like you! Not many people would do something like that, good for you.

I think your right about the dog being abused. I would just love her and give her time to get used to the new life style she's in. Maybe after she gets comfortable, take her to a few training classes might help her, just to get socialized with other people and other dogs, and work on her trust issues.

Good luck and God Bless.

I hope you keep her because it really sounds like you will be responsible...and your dog will have a friend! The key to this is 'PATIENCE'. If she is an older dog, it can take months for her to settle in and be less scared. If she is a younger dog, it will be an easier job. I know someone who got a dog from the pound and had the same problems. He was abused and scared of absolutely everything. With lots of attention, love, care, and patience, he is now one of the nicest and friendliest dogs I know. However, he still crouches down a bit when you stomp your feet on the ground, make a loud noise, or raise your hand in front of him. Good luck!

You are doing everything you can...she's already been to the Vet as you said. Just keep showing her love and affection. As for her laying on her back..thats because she is in heat. Thats a normal reaction. As for the laceration..does the Vet know about it? Did they give you anything for a possible infection? If not I would just keep an eye on it and make sure it doesnt become infected.

It'll take time for her to learn to love humans again. Just have paitience with her. If you can carry her into the backyard and teach her that it's fun. Play games with her, give her treats, let her see your other dog having fun back there.

Maybe you could take care of the abandoned dog when I lived in Mexico my mom would pick up abandoned dogs she found on the street and take them home to take care of them at one time we had about 7 dogs in our house and if she didn't take them home she would at least try to give them some food and water.

When you first meet a dog, you define the relationship. If you slowly stroke over her eyes, you are mothering her, just as mom cleaned her face.
if you pat her..pat-pat-pat, you are showing friendship, as that simulates tail wagging.
Just stay near her, and give her your understanding. Allow her to come to you on her own terms, and she will soon be a new best friends.
A chew toy, such as a rope toy, dipped in chicken broth and then dried, will give her comfort.
Be careful to give your other dog equal attention.

i wouldnt put out a found poster, obviously someone couldnt take care of her the first time. laying on her back....since shes bleeding, shes probably in heat. get her fixed or else diapers....it will be a slow process, but dont get angry or hit her, it will get worse and come back. just be loving and afectionate. its good your dog gets along with her.....pick her a pretty name also.
