An Akita is a Japanese Breed...they used them for more of a guard dog back in the day. Akitas are very family oriented but can be aggressive to people outside the family. As said before...they are excellent guard dogs.

bear hunting dog of the samurai

EDIT:
(renowned for their loyalty and strength of character, there is a famous monument in Japan's Tokyo Shibuya station for an Akita named Hachiko, who waited daily for his master's return - even long after his master's death)

beautiful dog - I almost adopted one, but apparenlty they necessitate a lot of work and can be too agressive with other dogs (and can easily kill them) - so not so good for someone like me.

They are very beautiful dogs. I have two and my female just had puppies. They are great with kids, very protective of you and their property. I wouldn't trade my dogs for anything.
