Are they big gas guzzling road hogs or a great way to haul my family, friends, dog etc. around? Let me know your thoughts....

I can appreciate the merits of well-designed SUVs like the Toyota RAV4, Honda Element/CR-V, Toyota Highlander hybrid and Lexus 450h for those who need the extra cargo space and/or off-road capability. However, many smaller cars these days such as the Scion xA and Honda Fit are able to provide the same cargo space, flexibility and passenger capacity as these larger SUVs. The only exception is if you need to haul more passengers, but at that point the largest SUVs use so much gas that you might as well just carpool using 2 cars. Generally, SUVs are an unsustainable preference in the face of rising gas prices, and people need to think about ways to live their life more economically.

The smaller ones are cool yet somewhat economical. There are also some hybrids out there. The biggest problem I have with SUVs is the HUGE ones, when the owners can't quite handle parking and negotiating the roads...

Hate 'em. It's just another example of Americans being spoiled. Believe it or not folks: There was a life without them 10 or 15 years ago. Americans just don't want to trouble themselves anymore. Americans want the easy way out. Hmmmm....seems relative to the obesity problem here in America.

Much as I hate to admit, they are great for hauling my kids and their friends, and all their stuff. We tried it with reg. sedan, and it usually ended up requiring more cars to do the driving anyway.
