It sounds like you will be doing a lot of walking, so I think the best thing you can take is a great pair of shoes. Nothing makes "travel walking" more unpleasant than heavy shoes, hard shoes, or, even worse, blister-rubbing shoes! These things can really take away the pleasure from your trip. On the other hand, a great pair of shoes can keep your legs, back, and mind energized and ready to take in the sacred and exotic beauty of Egypt!

ATM card - make sure it is compatible w/machines in Egypt. Be very security conscious - carry all your money/credit cards/passport/id in a neckpouch hidden under a shirt. Carry a couple of large scarves that can be worn on the head or as a long skirt.

A white noise machine to help sleep in an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar sounds (including noisy people in hotel halls). I like to use the travel version available from Sharper Image (it seems to be very reliable, runs on batteries or an adapter and has a lot of sounds to chose from). My sister, however, has had to return her Brookstone Sound Machine twice and ended up buying the one from Sharper Image. I think that Brookstone no longer carries that model.

The one thing that goes with me no matter where I go is my laptop. Have to have, I don't know if I could travel without it. I also take my camera with me on all my trips. So I guess those would be the two personal items I have to travel with.

But the most important thing to take with you no matter where you travel is money!

That little pocket translator/map thing that Yao the basketball player has a commercial for, I think it's a Garmin, very cool and really helpful.

Personally for me, I never travel without my camera and plenty of batteries! You can always describe a trip to somebody, but you'll seem even prouder if you have pictures to go with that description!

Downy Wrinkle Release spray :o) I love it. Also, if you need to pack many clothes, but have a luggage limit you can purchase bags that hold many items of clothing but "vacuum pack" them so you can pack more! Remember to keep your essential items (passport, medications, copies of prescriptions, copies of credit cards, etc.) in your carry-on luggage.

Sunscreen because in Egypt you'll be in the sun most of the time so i'd say sunscreen.

A small spray bottle of water, one with a very fine mist. It takes wrinkles out of clothes almost instantly, lets you fix up your hair in between showers ... and if it's really hot out you can spray yourself with it to cool down.
