This is my best friend's 4 year old daughter. She's had an imaginary friend for about a half a year now. She's not very obsessed but my friend says that the friend tells her to do things (NOT BAD THINGS) and helps with her homework. Ok, here's the freaky thing, either she's a genius or is really talking to someone. I'm a middle of the road skeptic but what Im seeing here is .... i don't know ... unbelievable ... see it to believe it. Example, her mom pulled out a couple of math problems from math101.com. She asked Julie (her daughter) to have if she could do this with her imaginary friend. She did it. I laughed, I didn't believe it. Her mom told me to give her a couple of examples. I am an actuarian so I wrote down some minor algebra questions. We went to her and she answered them ALL correctly ... (this was not multiple choice). I asked how she knew this and Julie said that "Alice" her freind always helps. Anyone ever had this happen to them?

Sorry, I forgot to add ....
She's been asked questions before about Alice. Apparently, Julie says that Alice doesn't know how old she is (that could be a kids mind), according to Julie, Alice is also a child that "looks pretty like Mommy", Alice likes to borrow Julies clothes ... can't remember the other stuff now.

this is not odd at all, many kids have experienced this and lately even many more.
it's obvious to me that the little girl you describe is an INDIGO CHILD.
http://www.theindigoevolution.com/index.html
or even a CRYSTAL CHILD
http://www.thecrystalchildren.com/crystal.html
these children can talk to angels or to their kind spirit guides
which in both cases is great! means the little girl is very evolved and helpful to the planet. there are many now.
tell the mother not to feed this situation with fear and narrowmindess but to look into the terms indigo, or crystal children.
hope it helps!

"Most children have the ability to see beyond physical reality, especially in infancy. It all goes to conscious awareness on different level.
It's interesting to watch an infant's eyes as they follow something/somene in the room that is not physically seen by anyone else. Infants often laugh and respond to whatever they are seeing which may be the spirit of the person who guided their soul into physical reality and is familiar.
Young children often have imaginary play friends - especially when there is no one around to physically play with. These 'imaginary friends' actually communicate with the child. Generally the imaginary friend/friends are harmless and the interaction ends as they child's physical consciousness slows down and gradually creates a pattern of returning to the physical body and staying at a lower level of frequency in order to function/perform their daily tasks in 3D. The older you get - the more grounded you have to be.
If the young child - generally below the age of 5 - is having fun with the imaginary friend they are attracting - then things are positive. If the child is apprenhensive or displays fear - professional help may be needed for the child. "

Wow, maybe the child thinks that she helps the imaginary friend with homework. And then the four year old is just a genius. I was like that when I was four. I could read chapter books, do all kinds of problems, and write. I could do more but I have no clue what all I did. What kind of math problems?

I have heard of this with kids before- she could have a spirit or a guardian spirit with her... basically a ghost helping her.
I would try a round of harder questions and start asking Alice about her past... like how old is Alice, what's her last name, where does she live, did she ever work a job. See if you can get more information...
Or maybe she is just really smart and needs Alice to express herself...

My daughter had two imaginary friends...Tootsie Belle and Jollie.
They even went to New Mexico with us on vacation. We have "pictures". Seriously.
My child is gifted academically. Like freaky smart.
So who knows. Just set Alice a place at the table!!!

I have not had it happen to me. There are many theories floating around about such things. Some say that the child is a savaant. Others say that that these friends are dimensional beings that are able to interact with our dimension. Still others claim they are ghosts.
Most times adults are unable to see these apparitions due to our ability to reason away what we see, or to overlook things in the hustle and bustle of every day life.
I would only be concerned if this "friend" was advising her to do things that would be potentially harmful in any way.
Unfortunately (?) many children that have these experiences at this age group usually tend to lose their ability to see or communicate with their "friend" after puberty kicks in.
Just proof that there are many mysteries in this world!

OMG, you guys really need to watch this. Algebra at 4 years old........this is kind of freaky! This reminds me of that movie "the amityville horror" with that child with the imaginary friend but at the same time at 4 years old it's not unusual to have an imaginary friend (they talk to their dolls etc) but to be doing that kind of math I am concerned too.

I have always thought that there was more to childrens mind and as we grow we lose it. They are not desensitized by the world yet. There could be two explantations to this:
1. It could be some kind of spirit/ghost that she has connected to. Should try to see if you can get more information about Alice
2. Could be an extremely bright child

Imaginary friends are completely normal. I had two growing up. They were brother and sister Gnomes named Polly and Wolly Poolie. My three kids have had a variety of imaginary friends. You only worry if your kid is like 16 and still has invisible friends.

Moses and Abraham had an imaginary friend that they said told them what to do.
If your friend's kid starts sacrificing other children or killing the first born of every family in Egypt -- then you should worry. Otherwise, no -- it isn't so abnormal.
