Tyson was just a puncher... late in his career. But in his prime Tyson went into every fight extremely prepared and not only hard punching like most people think, but he was lightning quick. He had the speed of Ali and the punch of Frazier. He was one of the greatest fighters of all time in his prime.

Before he signed on with Don King, Mike Tyson was a devastating puncher who was also a student of the game. Cus D'Amato and Jimmy Jacobs protected Tyson and kept him focused on nothing but boxing. He was a good defensive fighter when he was with them. However, when they died, the fact that they prepared Tyson for nothing but boxing was the fighter's undoing. He signed with King, he married Robin Givens and he then wound up with an entourage. His original trainer/management team prepared to be a champion in the ring but he was woefully unprepared for life outside of it. He was great, but once he signed with King, Mike Tyson was nothing but a sideshow.

If you can watch some of his old fights, you'll see a Tyson who was hard to hit with a punch. His defensive skills tend to be ignored, but he was a pretty complete fighter once.
