I'd talk to them more ... most depression, chemical or otherwise, stems from lack of someone to commiserate with. A feeling of being alone even when surrounded by large numbers of people. Medication does work, but is expensive, and anti-depressants often come with side effects that are almost as undesirable as the depression. A change of scenery or a vacation is a short-term solution. When I was younger and suffered from this the most I simply packed up and moved to gain a different perspective; this is no longer a practical solution once responsibilities set in.

Exercise does much to alleviate depression - it stimulates endorphin production and thus helps to swing the mood the other way. Volunteering and helping others gives a depressed person a sense of purpose outside oneself, because depression is a bit self-indulgent.

Is this person seeing a doctor? There could be a physical problem causing some of the depression. Have some tests run, for anemia, thyroid panel including t-3 and t-4, B12 deficiency. diabetes, etc. There is a possibility that if your friend is on meds, that they are either not the right dosage, or the wrong ones entirely. These are the issues that need to be brought up to the doctor. Good luck.

mike... it depends on how old the person in question is. if this person is a minor do not wait for them to consent to treatment. you need to take steps to have this person admitted into an in-patient program in a good hospital. depression that is left untreated will most likely lead to self-medication i.e. (alcohol/drug abuse), a life of misery for all involved, or suicide.
if this person is an adult, getting help will be difficult if they do/will not consent to treatment. my best advise would be to get informed,be supportive, encourage an in patient program, and to let go if you have to.
depression in some ways is a lot like having an addiction. unfortunately, sometimes the depressed person must hit rock bottom before they will seek treatment. good luck
please note that there is hope, after a long struggle with my own depression ( which has made me legally disabled) i now have a wonderful life, and i am stabilized with the help of on going medication and many years of intense therapy.

I nevertheless take Lamictal and Abilify and different drugs to on the present time. i became checked for heavy metals in my body and that i had a range of of Cadmium and Mercury and different metals in my body. those heavy metals reason no longer truly complications contained in the body yet contained in the mind. i became on heavy metallic detox drops two times an afternoon for purely about a three hundred and sixty 5 days before I had my first ECT. that is purely my opinion yet i imagine If i did not get maximum of those metals out i have self belief the ECT does no longer have labored besides. Be very careful even as taking any type of heavy metallic detox drops. commence small and slowly enhance because you'll experience very ill mentally through an overdose even if the impacts will truly very last for about an hour. it may take as a lot as 2 years to get each and each and every of the heavy metals out even if that is so worth it! I have a range of of goods i will recommend taking in the experience that your fascinated. P.S. have you ever had your metabolism checked? If that is intense you would possibly want to nicely be having withdraw warning signs because your body takes it in to quickly. That became also my difficulty so I reduce my meds in 4 products and take them 4 circumstances an afternoon (9am 12pm 3pm 6pm) and it particularly works tremendous! i am hoping I reported something that is functional. I purely pick to succeed :)

first of all don't let the person always make feel that u are willing to do anything for him/her.after a certain point s/he takes u for granted n it could delay the healing process.showing care is important though.
according to the theory of psychoanalysis sometimes there r instances which disturb a person unconsciously which affect the
person's behaviour.the soul needs to be nurtured for that particular trauma.eg:sexual abuse
the person should do things which make him/her feel happy & contended n should also try figuring out the hindrances.
joining courses like art of living (personal recommendation)can help.

You are a good friend.

Remind him that new medicines are being developed.

Sometimes different quantities, or combinations make the difference.

Urge him to keep plugging away at the cognitive therapy.

Suggest: exercise, good diet, plenty of rest, helping others, friendship, and family love.
