Distraction is the key. Bring a good book, and a game boy or DVD player, and an MP3 player. On that long of a flight you will need multiple distractions and there are some points in the flight that you can not use electronics.

There are some other things to help here is a link that you should read.

Distraction is a good thing. Since you are flying on a longer flight the plane should have some power ports this should allow you to bring all sorts of electronic gadgets like a DVD player, iPod, CD player, etc. and still be able to power them from an external power supply (like a car adapter with the cigarette lighter plug in.) Some normal or over the ear headphones would be good to have anyways, in the ear headphones start to hurt my ears after a few hours. Over the ear headphones can also block out the sound if you want to sleep. If you luck out and are not by a power port then bring some extra batteries or an external battery pack. Also because it’s a school trip (and you are hopefully traveling with friends) you might bring some board games or card games to help pass the time. Books are also good distractions.

All of these suggestions are good. Distractions with reading, and gadgets. But the issue here is bigger.
Yes, breathing will help. Deep breaths into your abdomen, not chest. You can breathe more deeply by counting each one. 3 beats in, 3 beats out. 4 beats in, 4 beats out. 5 beats in, 5 beats out, etc. This will help you build up to good long relaxing breaths when you panic.
But to avoid the panic..l used to be terrified of flying myself, until I had a major life change. The panic comes from the fear of what could happen. It's time to look at the fear, and sort that out.
Do you believe that things happen at random, or do you believe that everything happens for a reason?
For me, there is great comfort in knowing that everything happens for a reason.
Things are only 'good' or 'bad' when WE label them that way.
When you look at life this way, you realize that there is not really any such thing as success, or failure. Successful flight, or 'disaster', there are no mistakes in life.
You are taking this trip to enlighten and enrich your life. Be grateful for the opportunity, and the experience!
Life comes with obstacles like this fear, and its up to you whether you let the obstacle hinder you, or whether you turn it into a stepping stone on your amazing journey!
I hope you relax, and enjoy a fabulous trip!!!

I've had bouts of anxiety like the rest of the world, and the best thing that has ever helped me take my mind off something that was troubling me was to read a book. Make sure it is something that will hold your interest. For breathing exercises, the best way is to breath through your nose and exhale out your mouth. Usually ten deep breaths should help. Also consider listening to music while you read. Anything that distracts what fears you.

Make sure you havn't slept for a couple of days nights or really work out for 3/4 days and only rest a few hrs. each 24 hr. period and the day before boarding excersise and don't sleep.....then after boarding sit and rest and nature will do the rest....And get involved with the others taking the trip so a to take your mind off the flight....and don't fight the tired feeling that come over you....just slip into sleep thinking of those things that are dear to your heart....etc...

Best idea is to sleep through the whole ordeal and ask the flight attendant to wake you up when you reach the destination. The medication will also make you drowsy, so give in to that and sleep. You will never have time to fret.

I recommend trying to stay calm and not thinking about it. You could do this by reading a book, sleeping, talking with someone on the plane, or maybe if you have a DVD player watching a movie helps too!

Also try taking an MP3 with your favorite songs or like us next week we're taking our DVD player and watching movies on our flight, try also taking a book to read. My husband is taking his PSP movie player it's so small but you can see movies on a 3 inch screen, your time will fly watching a movie!

Bring your iPod, listen to your favorite music. Bring some good books to read and some snacks. And then relax, in spite of all your anxiety, flying commercially is still the safest way to travel.

Breathing, meditating, and reading are great ways to relax on a plane. I normally chew gum and read a book or listen to my walkman. I hope that helps.
