North Korea being a communist state is supplied with equipment from Russia. Sure they have the Mig 25s and the T-72 battle tanks and a small Navy. The country touts its nuclear capability so it can get foriegn aid. They are a desolite country and see how well the south is doing and want that too. The military is run by its dicator and have quite a large army. They are held somewhat in check by the S.Koreans and the US Army at the 38 paralell.

North Korea continues to position forces into the area just north of the DMZ— in a position to threaten Combined Forces Command and all of Seoul with little warning. Seventy percent of their active force, including approximately 700,000 troops, over 8,000 artillery systems, and 2,000 tanks, is postured within 90 miles of the Demilitarized Zone. This percentage continues to rise despite the June 2000 summit. Most of this force in the forward area is protected in over 4,000 underground facilities, out of over 11,000 nationwide.

Order of Battle Units:
I Army Corps
II Army Corps
III Army Corps
IV Army Corps
V Army Corps
VII Army Corps
VIII Army Corps
IX Army Corps
X Army Corps
XI Army Corps
XII Army Corps
U/I Army Corps - Hamgyong-namdo

Kangdong Artillery Corps
620 Artillery Corps

108 Mechanized Corps
425 Mechanized Corps
806 Mechanized Corps
815 Mechanized Corps

820 Armor Corps

Pyongyang Defense Command
Pyongyang AAA Command
SSM Division [Gen Staff]

North Korea's massive mechanized infantry and tank units, organized at corps and brigade levels and positioned in depth along the major routes of the attack line, are able to concentrate force on exploiting a breakthrough and enlarging the results of combat operations. The North Korean artillery units, protected in covered trenches and underground bases, can deliver deep fire support without exposure while their multiple rocket launchers are capable of concentrating fire support.

As of 1996 the North Korean air force consisted of six air divisions under the direct control of the national Air Command: three are composed of fighter wings, two of transportation wings, and one for fighter training.

North Korea has approximately seventy air bases, including jet and non-jet capable bases and emergency landing strips, with aircraft deployed to between twenty and thirty of them. The majority of tactical aircraft are concentrated at air bases around P'yongyang and in the southern provinces. P'yongyang can place almost all its military aircraft in hardened--mostly underground--shelters. North Korean aircraft are sheltered in underground hangars and plenty of runways are available.

And then, of course there's the 2nd Artillery Corps, the nuclear launching divisions....i could take up more pages on this, but you get my drift...
