I had a baby 6 weeks ago, and they gave me an IV to give me pain killers then to keep me hydrated. Since I left the hospital, I have had a bump in the vein just below where the needle was put in. It is also slightly bruised and there is a bit of soreness when i touch it.
I have never had an IV before, is this normal, or could something be wrong?
Does anyone know why this is?

Thanks.

From my own experiences with IVs, I'd say this is a normal event after removal. It should go away over time. Bruising around an injection site is not uncommon. The nurse may haved missed your vein the first time and had to try it again. The medications can also cause some local swelling.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it unless you experience severe pain or notice oozing from the injection site.

It's not exactly text book normal no, but I have seen this type of thing before. It may be that its taken longer to heal for you because your body has never had an IV before....If it gets really hard to move your arm or your worried about it the go see your doctor. I'm sure it's nothing though. Congrats with your new baby!

6 weeks ago is a long time to still be experiencing pain for an IV, I've had a number of them for various injuries. The lump is suspicious also. You need to get that checked out. Good luck.

It's probably ok, just some bleeding under the skin (hematoma). Apply warm, wet compresses for 15min. 3 x a day. That should help!

yes its normal. you can place a cold pack on it to decrease the swelling/pain.
