(theist) Hi! I read your question about God on yahoo answers
(you) Hi.
(theist) Why don't you believe in God?
(you) Well religion is an invention from about 6000 years ago because people didn't understand scientific causes and the rich exploited that to keep the poor people down.
(theist) Oh thats a lie of Satan, do you prefer darkness to light?
(you) No, we have a scientific explanation for light.
(theist) Thats a lie. Don't believe everything you've been told. Jesus is the light.
(you) Is there any physical evidence of Jesus?
(theist) The Bible.
(you) But the Bible was written by people and changed when one person copied it.
(theist) Thats a lie. The Bible was inspired by God. Satan lies to seperate us from God.
(you) Well actually thats not true theres good evidence that people manipulated the Bible.
(theist) Thats a lie. Why do you want to go to hell? You need to believe. What have you got to lose.

Actually, believing in God has nothing to do with religion. Religion has actually messed things up. We, as created beings, were actually "hardwired" in knowing that there is a God.

This is why children, who haven't even heard of God or been taught who God is, cry out to God when something traumatic happens to them or someone they love. They start praying!

Sadly, and this has happened to ALL of us, when a child grows into adulthood that connection is lost because of the accumulated knowledge that he/she learns which suppresses that connection from childhood.

This is why some people feel like there's something missing in their lives. They have everthing they need in life, a family, financial security, etc., but yet there's an empty spot in their lives that they can't seem to fill. Or, the thought of "There has to be more to this..."

For some, believing is easy; but for others, believing is hard. This is just the way it is. This has nothing to do with religion.

I would just tell them that YES I do prefer darkness and YES I do prefer the lies of Satan. Since they are going to assume that anyway, you might as well just play along. Plus then you can make weird noises like "BUUUurrrrggg Arrrrgggghuhhhhh" and tell them it's the voice of Satan coming through.
If you can't have an honest rational debate with them, I say make fun of them. But that's just me.

To quote Buddhist philosophy:

Eventually we will find (mostly in retrospect, of course) that we can be very grateful to those people who have made life most difficult for us.

No, but I have abandoned all hopes for stumbling into new ideas and thoughtful discussion, and have stopped checking out the religion and spirituality category because the non-religious are consistently more zealous, overbearing, and evangelical of their idealogy (or lack of?) than the religious.

No, I haven't had that conversation yet. But if that person were to contact me, I do believe I'd have to put them on my "block" list. I am so sick and tired of arguing with people over my beliefs (or lack thereof). If they can't just accept the fact that I have my own opinions and beliefs and they can't stop cramming theirs down my throat, I would just ignore them.

I have not, but I know what you're talking about. But to be fair, you've had plenty of good answers from me and some other Christians, so I'd appreciate the fairness being used, instead of only recognizing answers that you want to hear.

Ninety seconds for Pascal's Wager to rear its tired old head. That's gotta be some sort of record. At least the godidiot didn't cuss you out.

I don't use instant messaging (mild case of technophobia).

Sad...that's what happens when there is no depth of Life with Christ. As one grows in knowledge and wisdom in the Spirit, one sees that we are channels for Grace, not whips for persuasion and persecution. None of the Apostles and early christians ever did that...
