Some people want their kids to look up to them with honor and respect and others want to relate to them as a friend...How much do you tell your child? Especially if you made seriously bad choices.

Yes, so they won't think I'm perfect or try to place me higher than what I should be placed with them. That will teach them mom is human too as well as continue to build a relationship with them b/c I'm honest about my life and things I've done.

I would rather have my daughter learn from my mistakes and know that I am here to help her no matter what she gets herself into. I feel that if i am open and honest with her about the mistakes I've made, she will be open and honest with me about issues that she will have to deal with in her life. If I had that kind of relationship with my parents when I was growing up, I bet I would not have made as many mistakes as I did. I hope I can spare her some of the pain that I had.

My kids are still a little young to have full disclosure about my prior bad acts! ;-) But I do let them know that I'm far from perfect. I try to teach them that it's safe to make mistakes, it's how you deal with the mistake that matters. If I have a story from my childhood that's relevant to their situation I'll tell them.

You lift your game, learn new things, clean up your speech, live in as good an area as you can. Let them see how to live a good life. Then tell them as little as possible, until their kids brains have matured enough (over 21) to recognise that you are no longer that person who made all those mistakes.

Kids WILL use it against you, if they can...so dont give them ammunition to hurt you. they really dont want to know anyway...we'd all like to think our parents are better than we are.

No, your kids look up to you. You don't want to give them an excuse to do the same things that you did and have them throw it in your face and tell you that you that you did it why can't I.
