As cities go Amsterdam is cleaner, friendlier, and more enlightened and culturally rich than most. The museums are spectacular and the canal system is fascinating. As in any major city, you have to learn where the safe areas are and steer clear of the not-so-safe places. But 2-3 days is plenty of time to see Amsterdam, and I agree that it is not really a romantic honeymoon kind of place for a long-term visit.
How about just using Amsterdam as a place of entry and departure from Holland, and spending most of your time in the countryside? I think you could have a lovely honeymoon staying at a nice bed & breakfast in one or more of the quaint little villages like Gouda or Delft. I mean, think about it... would you rather spend your honeymoon in Los Angeles, or in some lovely little place nearby like Laguna Beach or Santa Barbara? Same difference.

I've been there twice and absolutely love it! It's got everything you're looking for. It's gorgeous city and people are super nice. I traveled around with the Pop Up Map of Amsterdam. It's very useful and it'll tell you where everything is. You can take a boat ride through the canals and have a glass of wine (the boat ride is very romantic!). There's a kissing canal that when you pass through under it, you're suppose to kiss your lover and you'll live happily ever after! There's a story behind it. They'll tell you on the boat ride. It's fun and you get to pass by all the other boats and see all the houses on the water. Nice. You can also rent a bicycle and do a little bike ride...so fun! Also, there's a bunch of museums you can visit. The Van Gough Museum is a must and the Heineken Brewery is a must! You get to have free beer at the end of the tour! If I remember correctly, Amsterdam is suppose to have some very nice jewlery especially diamonds so if you might want to check out some jewlers while you're there. The Red Light District is a place you should go by and see just for the experience. But you have to be careful at night, gotta watch out for pick pocketers. Other than that, it's not that bad. When I went, we went to see one of those live sex shows. Haha. It wasn't really live sex, it was more like strippers dancing nude on stage with some tricks up their sleeves. I got a free drink and a free condom as a souvenir with the ticket so that was cool. But there were a lot of tourists there at the venue. So we picked a popular and touristy one and not just some random one off the streets! The city is very quaint and nice especially a little outside the city. You get to see tulip fields and walk into local cheese shops. And don't forget to buy a pair of wooden shoes for souvenir! =)

Beautiful! Amsterdam gets a bad rap due to the coffee houses and red light district. Amsterdam is one of the most beautiful cities, with over 300 bridges and canals. You can walk just about anywhere in the city. There are gorgeous, centuries old buildings and homes. The Van Gogh Museum is a must. Also, walk along the floating flower market. It is pretty and you will never see anything like it in another city. You should also stop by a blue delft dealer and pick up a piece to always remind you of your honeymoon. As far as the red light district, it is something you will want to walk through during the day and DO NOT attempt to take pictures or you will lose your camera. It is safe, just a little bit seedy at night. Purchase a streetwise map before you go - it is very detailed and will help you a lot.

Amsterdam is a great city! I lived 2 hours away from it and I was there almost every weekend! But I must agree that it is not the best place for a honeymoon. No romanticism whatsoever. This city is better if you want some history and some fun.
The red light district is fun to walk through, especially if you don't mind the in-your-face sex. The Rijks Museum, Van Gogh Museum, and the Anne Frank House are all great for their history and art. The canals and random art through the city make it fun to just get lost. The Heineken Museum is fun because of the free beer, but get there early.
If you don't want romance, then go. If you want just a fun, busy time then go, But for my honeymoon I really wanted time to just sit on a beach chair, with a drink and my husband. The wedding and its preparation will take a lot out of you, I suggest a relaxed honeymoon, not Amsterdam.

I have been there many times, and in fact spent part of my honeymoon there on a house boat. It has its charm to be sure, but also somewhat seedy and run down in many parts of the city. The canals are like open sewers and the bicycles are a menace on the streets. For a honeymoon, I would recommend Capri or Paris.

Its very nice and quaint from an American perspective. Many bicycles everywhere. Try to avoid the seedy, rather disgusting red light district. Get out of town and see the fields of tulips if it is the right time of year.

My brother took me to walk by the canals and I liked that very much. The place is friendly I think.

Beautiful buildings, a lot of history. But if you like the red light district in any big city, you'll like it there.
