People think becasue a dog is easy to train it is smart.
That is not always true. It just means that they are more willing to please the owner and do not think as independantly as some other breeds.
As far as smart I am not sure. I have seen smart dogs in many breeds. Each has its own sense of inteligence as far as how they do what they do.
Labs are great at hunting and retieving but lousy at gaurding things.
Dobermans are great dogs but not very social to people other than it's owners.
Border collies are most likely the best herding dogs but if they can not herd things they can be destructive and naughty becasue they are bored and not getting enough exercise.
Each dog was bred to do something and they are good at what that thing is but sometimes not so good at other things.
Depends on what you want a dog to do how smart it will be at it's job.

Border Collies and Australian Shepards are some of the smartest dogs. Retrievers are popular, but they are extremely smelly (it's a breed thing, not a cleanliness thing). Dalmations are smart, but they are very aggressive and protective to their owners (same with weenie dogs). black labs are a good bet in both categories. Any kind of pointer should be intelligent. Smaller dogs are terribly independent.

Quote:

"The Boston Terrier is a lively, highly intelligent, smooth coated, short-headed, compactly built, short-tailed, well balanced dog, brindle, seal or black in color and evenly marked with white. The head is in proportion to the size of the dog and the expression indicates a high degree of intelligence.

Temperament
The Boston Terrier is a friendly and lively dog. The breed has an excellent disposition and a high degree of intelligence, which makes the Boston Terrier an incomparable companion. "

I've lived with many Bostons. They're right! Too smart for their own britches.

Definately Hounds. They are extremely intelligent and will figure out the darndest things, and get into the darndest things as well. Very good at training YOU!

Now if what you mean is trainable, I would say Goldens and
Shelties. Many of the working/herding breeds are highly trainable.

Intelligent does not equal trainable. Some boneheaded breeds are highly trainable and some very intelligent breeds are not nearly as trainable

I would have to say a German Shepard, Lab, Golden Retreiver, rotweiler they all seem to be smart as for that is why the police choose them for the K-9 Units. Border Collies are way to hyper and tend to need lots of space to run around and things to do.They are good farm dogs but not good for in a town or city because they tend to chase cars because there is nothing to do.

I don't think there is a way to measure intelligence but my friend says Border Collies. And for niceness, I'd say you have to find out the dog's personality.

I would think Collies, or Labs or Golden retrievers; but really any breed can learn if you work with them from the start and show them a TON of love and affection.
