You can make an announcement to your host and guests that you are about to demonstrate a significant religious rite you recently witnessed while on your last trip to the Far East.
Grab your biscuit and sop away. Look the other guests straight in the eyes and bid them to join you in a holy sop. They will thank you for your insights and the chance to parctise an exotic rite...they wannna sop up the gravy anyway.

If the gravy is served over the roll/biscuit, sop away. If it isn't, leave the gravy. Put the piece of roll/biscuit on you fork, and get what you can. It is assumed that biscuits and gravy isn't the most elegant of foods, and it would be OK to sop without offending anyone.

My idea of proper is any way you feel like that doesn't gross out your fellow diners. I do know there are other views.
My parents taught me to use bread or a biscuit to sop up any liquid on my plate with the idea that leaving anything on your plate was wasteful. I could not leave the table until my plate was clean. Later I read etiquette books that prohibited getting one's fingers that close to the food, but sometimes allowed the knife and fork method. I suspect it is a class matter. I think the finger method is a little more efficient, so if you are short of food, it is the more proper way. If you have plenty of food and wish to show that you have the manners that entitle you to a higher social standing, you will use your knife and fork. However, if you are confident about who you are and are eating with friends, make yourself and them comfortable

If I'm in my own home, I just wipe the gravy with the biscuit in my hand. If I'm "in public" or at someone else's home, I use a fork and knife to cut the biscuit into bite sized pieces. Then I use the fork to eat the biscuit\gravy mix.
Happy sopping!

I don't think there is a "proper way" to sop up gravy w/your biscuit. But, if I had company over I would probably do it with more class then if I was alone.

I believe it's not proper etiquette to sop.....(although personally if sauce or gravy is that good, it's a shame to waste!) ;0)

Away from you. Just like with soup. You scoop in the direction away from you. With rolls/bisquits/bread do not saturate them with the gravy so that they fall apart on the way to your mouth. A little bit at a time is appropriate.

There is no proper way! I think it should be outlawed.
I cannot stand for my bread or biscuit to get wet or soggy, so I dont sop!

Get as much of it as you can first WITH the biscuit/roll....
If there's any left on your plate just leave it there.
ORRRR You can pick up the plate firmly with both hands (one on either side) and just lick the plate off. If any gets on your chin, cheeks etc. wipe it off with your tongue or index left index finger. If any gets on your shirt grab that too (with the left hand only) and just suck on it for a minute (no stains).
Be sure to also burp loudly as well before pushing yourself away from the trough.
