Well, I'll be! Neva knew there were so many folk out there a clannin' and a bangin' cups and stuff (tombstones, yikes!) and most not even knowing why...
My Big Bear Ron...when I was little, I noticed my momma always kept her spoon in her coffee cup while she sipped on it. I asked her why and she said 'cause it reminded her of HER momma. She had been taken away from her momma as a little girl and she did it every time she drank coffee or tea because she was left with a memory of her momma doing the same thing when she drank coffee or tea. Years later, when she got older, we were all finally reacquainted with her momma (my grandma) and I got the opportunity to ask Grandma why she did it and she said because when she was little, her momma died (my great grandma) and her memory of her was that she always left her spoon in her cup. Ha ha. So that's why she did it and why my momma did it, "why did great grandma do it?" I asked...Grandma. She replied with a smile, "My momma was very poor and lived in a one-room shelter with a dirt floor and kept the utensils inside the plate or cup so as not to get them dirty."
Guess what, she's passed on and my own momma's near there. Yep...I drink my coffee and my tea with the spoon inside the cup.

I don't think so - not that I can remember. Maybe they are people who cook alot and are used to having something heavier than coffee (like batter or whipped cream) on their spoons which they have to knock off so it won't drip on the table. Knocking a spoon on the rim of a container is just something they do so often- because they cook so much - it's just become second nature. It's like the people who say, "bless you" after a person coughs instead of sneezes. Gee, if it's a metal spoon on a ceramic cup that must be pretty irritating. If you are the one who does it you might think about breaking the habit.

My husband does the same thing and it drives me batty! Rather than take the spoon from his hand and hit him on the head with it, I usually find a quick chore to do in another room until he's done clanking the cup.

I tap the spoon repeatedly on the mug so as to remove as much liquid from the spoon before I set it on the table (then I'd have to wipe the mess up later, and I am quite lazy). Plus, it's really annoying to others.

YES! and it irritates me! I realize this is a habit that they have learned. Still, this sound goes straight through my ear drums. It does not matter who or where, it is an unnecessary noise! I have been in a restaurant and asked a near by diner, " Would you PLEASE! stop clanking your spoon!" Just what are they trying to knock off of their spoon anyway? Thanks for the opportunity to 'Vent'.

One of my aunt's does. When we point it out to her (because she does this without even realising it), she claims that it's to get rid of the brew collected on the spoon, so that it doesn't drip/ run off when she sets the spoon down.

No, but my sister-in-law leaves the spoon in her coffee. I'm waiting for her to poke herself in her eye one of these days.

I used to and whenever I go visit their grave I tap on the tombstone with a crowbar and leave coffee grinds all over the place. It's what they would have wanted, don't you think?

Sure, they are trying to get all the drips off of the spoon so they won't stain the tablecloth.
