Cops are trained to use intimidation tactics in order to obtain a confession. Once you are read your rights and agree to talk, then everything is pretty much fair game.
Even if you are innocent (which differs from being not-guilty), it is rarely advantageous to talk to the police if you are being, or could be charged with a crime. When stopped, ask if this is a custodial stop or informational. You are under no obligation to talk to an officer, or remain at a scene with an officer unless you are being legally detained (which would constitute a custodial stop).
Cops are rated on the number of arrests they make. If they are a detective, and make few arrests, then they can count on losing that prime job in quick order.

Police like confessions because lawyers are really good at getting guilty people off the hook. They twist and bend reality until your average jury isn't sure which end is up.
A confession from the criminal goes a long way toward swaying a jury to a conviction. It's difficult (but not impossible) for a lawyer to explain why his client confessed to a crime he didn't commit and show how his client knew facts about the crime that only the perpetrator would know.

They read you the Miranda Warning, and then they ask you questions about your suspected crime because once you begin speaking, and answering their questions, you are in effect waiving your rights to silence thereby possibly incriminating yourself in whatever situation you've been arrested for, so that "anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
You have the right to silence (and not incriminate yourself), and when you begin answering their questions once you've been read your rights, you're waving that right to silence.
The police may want you to speak about the possible crime which they can then use against you when, and if, you go to trial for your suspected crimes.
