I might be taking care of my friend's cat temporarily. Even If I don't, I will still be shopping for a cuddly cat to keep me company. Any ideas ?

Yes! This is a great opportunity to save a life at the local shelter.

Or, call around to vets in your area. Many will have adults that need a home. The advantage here is that the staff will know the cat's personality and will be able to help you select a kitty that best fits your desires.

I work for a cat vet and we have several adults for adoption. Most people want kittens. It's refreshing to hear that you want an adult. A further good point is that you won't have to go through the kitten stages!

There are so many homeless ones. You are bound to find just the right new friend for you.

Congrats on getting an adult cat!! Many adult cats are euthanized each year because people want kittens. I suggest going to the pound and picking out a cat there. Those cats need homes the most and there are typically many to choose from. You may also check the classifieds in the paper because many people will give away cats when they get passed the kitten stage. Make sure you have your new cat test for Feline Leukemia and FIV at your local vet!! Also if he/she is not already fixed do that too!! Good luck!

Getting a cat is not like getting a dog. As you probably know some dogs can stand as tall as four feet at the shoulders and depending on where you live that can be a problem. Getting a cat, however, mainly depends on what breed you want. There is usually a breed chart at the vets office. Go by there and see if there is a particular one you like. There are also books and magazines like "Cat Fancy" you can buy that have very colorful pictures of cats.

Any cat is great... the name you choose for it makes all the difference. It will be friendly as long as you love it, brush it, play with it, and talk to it. I have two cats- they are so lovable. They talk and purr uncontrollably. They are the sweetest cats I ever knew. They also give kisses- they would wake me up in the morning and purr in my ear then jam their noses in my face.

The thing to think about is how much cat hair you want laying around your house. A long haired cat sheds alot since the fur is thicker. One of mine is an american shorthair. The other is an abyssinian. All cats shed, but as long as you groom them frequently it will be ok. What names were you thinking of? I can help pick out a good name by numerology. I need your full name, date of birth and the names of your new pet.

A Siamese cross. I've always had Siamese cats and they are very talkative and smart. My cat right now is a male Siamese-tabby cross and when you get home at night he greets you at the door and starts meowing away (not strident, just like he's talking to you!). It's so cute! Plus we've taught him to walk on a leash and as a kitten we got him to play fetch with us (we didn't keep up the training though and he's forgotten how!)
I have heard that pure Siamese cats are really high strung and mean though. That's why I recommend the cross.

I would really suggest going to your local shelter for a cat. Many adult cats in shelters are already spayed/neutered and some are declawed (if that is what you are looking for). They usually have their vacinations and are already adapted to life with humans. I commend you for thinking about an older cat. Many are euthanized as most people look at kittens and pass the adult cats by.

It would be great if you could adopt one from a local shelter, and even better if you could choose one that's 3 years old or older. Most adopters choose only younger cats, which leaves behind so many great potential pets!!

Check your local humane society. The one thats in my town runs a Page in the news paper of their cutest pets. They may also have a website.adopting would be cheaper and it would give them a second chance.most of the cats there are shy but if you give them another chance you can build a really loving relationship. This is what i did with Sosha. We adopted her and she was shy but after we fed her and played with her and petted her, she cant stand it when we leave.

I have had several different kinds. I like big fat Male Orange Tabby's the best. They have the best personallities. They are laid back, but like to play and are good with kids and other animals.
