I am vsiting indonesia in july, and am planning to visit Borobudur (the largest buddist temple in the world). Due to the fact that it is near the epicenter of the yogyakarta earthquake, do you think that visiting it now is a good idea? Are the services and facilities still available? would it be unsensitive to visit a tourist site while they are still grieving?

A Little Thing about Borobudur
--------------------------------
You can visit Borobudur. Borobudur wasn't damaged (it's only damaged a little) and the houses in the surrounding area (Magelang) aren't damaged, too (some of them are damaged but not all).

Merapi Volcano
--------------------------------
There is a rumor telling us that Merapi Volcano is going to erupt. If you are afraid of that, stay away from Borobudur temple. Magelang is not so far from Merapi Volcano, so beware! Sometimes black polluted smoke comes from the mountain and is very dangerous.

Prambanan Temple
--------------------------------
Located not too far from Borobudur, this is the famous temple which was damaged because of the earthquake. If you want to see this temple too, rescheduled your visit time to Indonesia. Prambanan Temple is fantastic, and if you visit Magelang (Borobudur), you should visit this temple too. But because Prambanan Temple is temporary closed, you can't visit Prambanan Temple.

Surrounding People
--------------------------------
People may be sensitive to tourists, because they still need help. I suggest you to delay your visit time to Magelang (Borobudur) due to this reason. And I believe not all of the services and facilities will be available.

Conclusion: Visiting Borobudur is okay, but it would be better if you delay your vacation until, say, October/November.

It is a good idea to visit Borobudur. I am from Indonesia. They are some small damages in there but that is not a problem four tourists and guests. They still have facilities after the earthquake. You should go there it is a really nice temple.

I used to live in yogya 5 years ago. There was only a little damage near Borobudur and it will be no trouble to visit. Please still visit because I know you will enjoy your stay. My only advice is that you take public transport to Borobudur, that way you can stay as long as you like. It is very big! It should take no longer than 1 hour to get there and if you want to stay the night there are some cheap hotels and guest houses.

shukuken answers good. besides being a visiting tourist you will see opportunities to act more and giving any kind of help for the quake victims. you will also see the strenght of people in yogyakarta to raise up again after the quake. feel the atmosphere, appreciate the warmth heart of yogya people .. i believe you won't forget the visit to borobudur at this time. most of the services and facilities are there up and ready. yes, you have the sensitivity that will make you very much welcome there.
if you finally decide to go, i wish you have a great time.

I've been to Borobodur and it is truly spectacular. I would think that the people in that area need all the support they could get, and tourism dollars would be welcome. Its wonderful that you are concerned about sensitivity--for that reason alone I think you would be a welcome visitor.

I did hear that the site itself is largely intact--just make sure you have solid reservations at a hotel nearby before you go, and allow extra time getting to and from the site.

Guess you should, or it will disappear with a few more quakes, one of the ancient wonders of the world.
