There were quite a few Jewish sects in that part of the world around that time. Many of them were messianic sects, such as the Essenes - some of which had turned from traditional Judaism. In this period in history it was not uncommon to hear tales that this person or that person was the promised Messiah. Christianity was a sect that became firmly established by going cosmopolitan - after Paul promoted it in Italy and Greece and blended it with their mythology of virgin birth, the hierarchy of deities, and a fiery Hades place of punishment, etc., none of which had any connection to Jesus's religion (Judaism).

The whole Old Testament is from Judaism. Jesus was Jewish. The first Christians were originally Jewish. The whole idea of monotheism is Jewish.
As for Megan W.'s comments (a few answers above), in Judaism, all signs don't point to Jesus being the messiah. The Torah says that the messiah will be descended from King David on the father's side. Jesus' father wasn't a descendant of KIng David.

Before Jesus was born the religion of God's people the Israelites was Judaism. God sent Jesus to earth to die for the sins of the world. Jesus was the Messiah he was also of Jewish lineage as is evident in the new testament gospels. With the death and resurrection of Jesus people no longer had to offer sacrifices, because Jesus, the ultimate sacrifice died for their sins. The issue is that Jewish people do not believe the Jesus was the Messiah and so they follow the old testament principles. Hence the different holidays and celebrations. Christianity is the religion of people who believe Jesus was the Christ.

There are many issues!
Jews History is Talmud (Initial 5 books written by the high priest of Egypt, the rest by Jews). Christianity has adopted almost at its entirety Talmud calling it Old Testament!
Thus Christianity accepts all the Prophets, charlatans, patriarchs, etc, of Jews as their own, also!
I think that they do not differ in the issues you wrote! Same god, different Messiah, Jews are smarter and know if and how Hell and Heaven exist! The 10 commandments are the same, the judgment is the same, but with some different regulations!

They differ on only one real point, and that is whether or not Jesus was born the Savior.
Christians say yes, he was the fulfillment of Old testament prophecy, the son of God, the Savior, and part of the Holy Tinity.
Jews dont believe that, are still waiting for the Son of God that was pophesied, and dont accept the New Testament.
In that fact alone, they follow Old Testament law, and their religion and holidays stick to original Jewish practice.
The roots of Christianity in Judaism is that the OT prophecy tells us Jesus will be Jewish in his lineage, and that he is a fullfilment of the Prophecy.
Its belief, not ancestry, as to whether or not Jesus was the savior or not.

The Old Testament is a Jewish text. Prior to Jesus, it was the dominate religious doctrine of that time and place. From the Old Testament, Christianity and Islam have their beginnings with the story of Abraham.
Jesus if not Jewish was at least versed in the Old Testament. The only other dominante religions in his time/place were pagan, though it is possible he may have known of Buddhism thought and tradition.

A lot of it boils down to the fact that Jews don't believe that Jesus was the son of G-d, so therefore they do not believe in the New Testament, only the old. Thus, they are still waiting for the first coming of their Savior, while Christians are waiting for His Second Coming.

when Jesus came to earth, he preached that the mosaic law was null and void, because the scribes and pharisees were hypocritical and taking things to extremes (washing their hands up their elbows and praying publicly to get honor from the people). he instituted principles to live by based on the mosaic law, but not taking it to those extremes. he is the reason the Greek new testament was written, to show his teachings and the prophecies imperfect men were inspired to write. as for christian and Jewish faiths being different, Jews still think the messiah is coming, even though all the facts point to Jesus as being the messiah. so they still follow the mosaic law and wait for the messiah. but Christians...true Christians follow the principles set out in the entire bible and act on these in their own lives. and the passover was celebrated by Jesus, but he only instructed his followers to celebrate his death, by implementing the memorial of his death to be celebrated on Nisan 14 of the Jewish calendar each year. heaven and hell are very different than commonly thought. heaven is for a select group of people, only 144,000 as written in Revelation, and Hell is the common grave. So really when we die, we are placed in Hell by our families and loved ones, awaiting resurrection which is to come after Armageddon, also prophesied in Revelation.

Most original Christians were Jews, yes Jesus was a Jew. Christianity and Judism differ in that Jews don't believe Jesus is the Messiah.

Jewish roots- Jesus was Jewish and to be a Christian means to follow Him, so Christianity roots came from Him, He is fully man and fully God, so He is still Jewish and when He comes back to establish His kingdom here on earth He will be Jewish. In the book of Revelation it calls Him the "Lion from the tribe of Judah"!
