Both are abbreviated versions of what formally should be engraved as "July 8, 2005". With that said, if one chooses to abbreviate, 7-8-5 is just as good an abbreviation as 07-08-05. To be even more formal, one could have the cup engraved:
July the Eighth, Two Thousand and Five".

I think displaying dates like that are really confusing - I'de go with July 8/05 - July 8, 2005 etc. But that is a really nice gift, I still have mine from when I was born on display (and that was over 40 years ago!)

I would have thought that 05 would be better. Most people still recognise and use 2005 or 05. Very few people use 5

No. No one would know what it means because it isn't in a date format. I would use 07-08-05 or 7-08-05. Or how about July 8th, 2005?

if you want it to be special like a baby's birth, then go with July 8, 2005. the 7-8-5 looks like a code or something.

It is more proper to put 7-8-05, but it's all up to you and your preference.

i don't think so... in genalogy ... people use one of two basic formats... day month year or month day year ..
so is the b day
jul 8 2005
or
7 aug 2005
so spell three letters of month to determine proper order... then go with at least two if not all four digets for year of birth...
to make it a keep sake... add full name to cup as well and if you would the city and state of child birth... length and weight are helpful as well... you may also want to add full names of both parents
such as child of john j and jane b doe
if you add maiden name ... place maiden name in ( )
this may sound odd, years from now your child will like it
