Despite how much I like the response of "js3971", I would say any school board trying to enforce a need for swimming proficiency to graduate would be risking a huge civil lawsuit they couldn't possibly hope to win.

No, bybutterfly, it's not a requirement unless you want to be a lifeguard; that's something else again. You do have to have a certain number of P.E. classes, etc., but not swimming. If you or a friend of yours doesn't know how to swim (and many, many people don't because they don't live near water, fear of water, etc.), do yourselves a favor and check out beginning swimming classes at your local YMCA or community pool. They're very patient, it's stress-free and they actually turn something scary into something fun. They always have you begin in the shallow end of the pool and just get you comfortable in the water. Classes are a couple of times a week and before you know it, you're swimming! Good question, though.

Not usually, no. High school I know requires you to take classes such as gym up until (i believe) grade 10, but they don't require you to be able to swim. Besides, how many schools have a swimming pool? For the most part, that sort of thing is completely optional. Besides, how would people with hydrophobia (intense fear of water) be able to graduate? Or people with certain muscle disorders?

Yes, it's now a state law in 39 states. Just before your graduation ceremony, you are thrown into a pool. If you swim out, you get your diploma. If not, oh well, you're sold to cannibals.
