you should boost your cardiovascular system--and condition it so you have more endurance
do this by running on an inclined treadmill
start easy at first since your heart isn't at that level yet--and slowly work your way up--so you can run consistently for 20 minutes or so
then get back in the pool to see your cardio conditioning progress
you'll notice significant results!
make sure you learn how to pace yourself

You need to work your long distance which will improve your endurance. Try and do sets on a short interval where you are building up to (depending on your level of experience) anywhere from 200s to 500s. You have to push yourself so when you get to that breaking point in a race or practice where you want to slow down, you can push through the pain and keep going. It's got a lot to do with your mentality as well. Other things to try are working on your breath control. You can do sets of "hypoxics" where you are essentially swimming underwater (usually the short length of the pool - horizontally) and holding your breath all the way across. Do these on an interval too. If you're breathing improves it should improve your whole race. Good Luck!

If you want to gain endurance, you should swim around half pace but for longer distances at a time.

I've had this problem too; I would suggest swimming all the time, whenever you get the chance, jump into the pool and swim, even until you feel like you can't swim anymore, keep swimming; in due time, it will pay off. good luck :)

Keep swimming until you are nearly not able to anymore. Do that daily and your endurance will increase.

Use a kick-board until you build stamina .You can last much longer before tiring . Switch off and go with ; then without the board .

train at distances longer than what you race. if you race in the 100m, train for at least 400m at a time. if you race 200m, train for 800.
