You do not need a college degree to open or "direct" a preschool. Your teachers may be another story - most states require teachers of preschool to either have their standard certification or CDA classes from a junior college. (That is if you are trying to get state accredited.)
As a director, a college degree looks more appealing to banks (for loans if you need them) and to parents who are concerned with how a center is run.

it would be a service to yourself to take at least some college classes. with the right amount of money though anyone can open any business they want.
i would talk to a community college counselor and ask them for advise. i'm glad you love kids, i often need someone to watch them and i don't have that option.

Are you planing on being just the owner? Do you want to be the director? All states require some kind of formal education to be a director of a childcare center

I think it depends on the state. In North Carolina all you have to do is open a private school and you don't have to have a degree. you need to have ged or high school diploma.

you probably need a license and/or certificate. why not trying a babysitting center? that might be a good place to start. i would look online at schools around where you live and see what they say
