I want to be able to scan written or typed (like from a magazine) recipes into my computer and make changes to it if needed. Is there any free software that can help me do this??

Most new scanners come with an OCR (optical character recognition) driver. There is usually a seperate button on the scanner if you want to use this feature. What it does is, after scanning, it tries to read and convert the pixels into characters. The accuracy rate is never 100% though, its usually around the quality of the scanner, the page you are scanning, the font size, type etc. The OCR is for typed material where as ICR is for written stuff. The ICR accuracy will vary based on the clarity of the person's writing.

You have to proof-read it afterwards and correct any mistakes.
