Friendship is love ! Now, if you feel like your love is getting more intense and that you are craving a more intimate/physical relationship you should tell him.
You shouldn't be worried about things not working out because if you never try you'll never know.
If you both are real friends then even if it doesn't work out as lovers you should still be able to continue on as friends.
I was able to and it wasn't all that awkward.

My boyfriend and I were friends from preschool all the way up to graduation in 2005. I think that you need to consider whether or not you can handle it if he rejects you and go on as friends first. If you can then why not?

You are loving a friend. Are you sure that he won't get bored with you? He might know everything about you. What is the exitement all about? Six years are to long without sex.

Go for it, but be careful. If after 6 years he hasn't made a move on you, he may not want anything more.

It depends on the feelings you have for him. If you think you love him, then go for it! Ask him out or something! Or if you feel that it is safer if you were friends longer then relax!

If you get the sense that the feeling is mutual, go for it. Otherwise, it might be one of those cases where he's going to feel uncomfortable around you from then on.
