Not totally sure, but I believe the square shaped box is made for deep dish Sicilian pizza which is usually square in shape. Rather than buying two different shaped boxes, one round, one square, pizzerias can save money by putting round pizzas in square boxes. Since both round and squares pizzas will fit in square boxes, but only round pizzas fit in round boxes.

The square box is easier to store, it fits nice and flat against the wall. When you walk into any pizza shop, you see all the boxes stacked up nicely. That wouldn't happen with a round box.

A square box is cheaper and easier to manufacture than a round box. Plus when the pizza delivery dude trips on the sidewalk on his way up to your doorstep,a round box might roll away.

If the pizza guy trips and the pizza is in a round box it may land on it's side and roll away. If it's in a square box it won't roll away.

It is generally long and wide but thin to allow pizza to be placed inside. Some pizza boxes allow two circular pizzas to be placed side-by-side. While pizza is never stacked inside the box to prevent it from sticking together, the boxes themselves are easily stackable (square boxes are easier to carry than round).

It's easier to carry a square box as opposed to carrying a round box. For instance if you are carrying a round box, it keep bumping aginst your stomach. It is also easier to grasp a sqaure box with both hands. :) Maybe you should ask the people you order the pizza from....lol.

Costs. The cardboard is put into machines that perforate each of the boxes for folding into a box. This would be difficult making round boxes.
