Here is what the Adventist web site says:

"18. The Gift of Prophecy:
One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is prophecy. This gift is an identifying mark of the remnant church and was manifested in the ministry of Ellen. G. White . As the Lord's messenger, her writings are a continuing and authoritative source of truth which provide for the church comfort, guidance, instruction, and correction. They also make clear that the Bible is the standard by which all teaching and experience must be tested. (Joel 2:28, 29; Acts 2:14-21; Heb. 1:1-3; Rev. 12:17; 19:10.)"

I have heard very few that will do that and then only to explain some things that are hard to understand from the bible. She is considered to be a prophet and even with that she never claimed to be anything but a lesser light that pointed to the greater light. If you look at some of the things she stated to be true and then look at when they were actually proven to be that way, you will find she did have a gift as she said things that were totally contrary to what was believed at the time but over a hundred years later were proven to be correct. Almost everythng that she predicted has come to be, the only ones remaining having to do with the second coming of Jesus and the events just before that is still in the future. Adventists recognize her as a prophet of God but will go to the bible for any and all things they believe. Even Ellen White said we should all do that, go to the bible, read and study it. IF you ever read any of her works, you will find she always points you to the bible.

They quote her because she was an inspired writer and if you test what she says against the Bible there is no contradiction she actually says that they should quote the Bible first. She is a good writer and sometimes she gives a clearer understanding of some texts by comparing scripture with scripture. However, SDAs should not put her above the Bible.
