There has to be enough force to the front of the vehicle that will impact the air bag sensors located behind the grill of the vehicle....speed is not a factor in this...you can be sitting still and a vehicle can be traveling 35mph and hit you head on and the air bags will deploy.....as long and the ignition switch is turned on..........but if the vehicle that hits you has a sloped front end say...that of a camaro....there's a chance that car will go under your car and the air bag wont deploy....food for thought.

It's the force of the impact that determines if the airbag will deploy. While speed is a factor, the mass of the object that you collide with will play a significant role in whether or not the bag deploys.
