Just wondering how you got around the "God" thing. I went to the court house for a Wedding the other day & even the Judge mentioned the "G" word a few times. Is there special ceremonies for Atheist? I'm very curious

My wedding wasn't in English, but there was no 'A' word either. In Turkey, it's illegal to mention God during your wedding. Pretty cool, eh? I love this country!

My own wedding had no mention of a god. We have a pastor friend, and she understands that we have our beliefs. She came to our apartment and signed off on the certificate in front of our two witnesses. We did not want some elaborate ceremony. Weddings are supposed to be a good thing, and so many people worry too much about the wedding that they can't focus on the positives.

As an ordained minister, I have officiated at two weddings. I made no mention of any gods. In fact, my usual speech says that I don't have the power to bless or sanctify the marriage. That is something that only the spouses can do.

If you want to get married and leave out the religious trappings, I suggest that you talk a friend into becoming ordained at the Universal Life Church (http://www.ulc.org/). Most likely, your friend can perform the ceremony far cheaper than a Justice of the Peace anyway.

Edit: I forgot to point out that some communities refuse to acknowledge the ULC as a valid religion. The city of New York has taken legislative steps to deny this religion any power within its boundaries.

If you find the right person, a ceremony can be anyway the two people want it. We are not atheists, we are spiritual, just not "religious", but we found a wonderful person to marry us and she had lots of ceremonies for us to look through and change for what we wanted for our special day.

Not married yet, only engaged. Yes you can get a non-thumpalicious wedding. Go to a justice of the peace and inform them you don't want any "god" crap in your ceremony.

Well, I've been married for almost 16 years, and I wasn't worried about the wording of the ceremony. I'm sure you can have someone word it however you want, write your own vows, etc.

I'm an athiest, and when I got married I had a courthouse wedding, which, incase you didn't realize, has nothing to do with God. It's a LEGAL wedding.

unfortunately, we weren't able to get around it b/c we got married at a resort in Jamaica. they don't offer a Justice of the Peace, so we got stuck with a non-denominational minister. we just smirked through the whole ceremony.

Most atheists are smart enough not to get married.
