My Golden gets very destressed when he does not have his tennis balls with him at all times. When we go to the bark park he is running after and taking other dog's tennis balls. He will whine and cry for hours if he does not have at least one tennis ball with him at all times. This can not be normal behavior, and when we are at the bark park none of the other Golden's stress so much. There has to be a solution. :(

Tennis balls will haveve no adverse effect on the teeth. The reason excercising for caution is that a number of dogs learn to catch 'things' rather than specifically catching the specific toy or ball, and then when you are at the beach/park and some uneducated idiot throws a rock or stone for your dog he tries to catch it, resulting in borken teeth. As long as you keep an eye in him when you are out to make sure that the above does not happen then playing with a ball in the garden wont put your dog in danger and will be a grweat way to build a bond with you dog while givig him excercise and attention.

put him on a long leash at the park and when he tries to go after another dogs ball pull him back and tell him "NO" and then give him HIS ball. Willtake some repition but it will work. A tennis ball is a Golden's best friend. I know I have a Golden also.

Why on earth would you want to stop him playing with a ball, that is the only form of enjoyment that he has with you so enjoy it. If you want to break his obsession with the ball you may as well give the dog away because you sure don't have time for your beautiful dog. A Golden Retriever loves to play and maybe that is the only way he knows how to show you, you are not paying enough attention to him, maybe you should spend more time with him and not keep trying to change him

My German Shepherd would not chase a ball or anything over 12 feet away. At 4 months i sent him away for 3 weeks of training. He came back obsessive over chasing his rubber balls with a small rope on it. TENNIS BALLS EAT AWAY AT ENAMEL ON THE DOGS TEETH> He loves these two balls. I throw one, he brings it back, i throw the other. He is directing his DRIVE to the balls. He will either be active with the balls or something else. If you take away all his toys, he will be less active. You are the one that works with his drive. You let him play, it goes up. You stop playing with him, he just lays around and gets fat. later,

What is wrong with tennis balls. My dog loves them and I would never take them away. I would rather he chew on them rather than anything else in my house.

Is this really a problem? I would think that you would want your dog chewing on tennis balls instead of your good shoes.

Why would you want to do that?? If your dog is fighting for them with other dogs then just take all of the balls away.

I say embrace it. My aunt has a chocolate lab that loves tennis balls and frisbees. If you keep throwing them he'll just keep running after them; no matter how long you do it. He loves it. Why take away what he loves? At least he doesn't have a but licking habit!

:) Good luck with that!! I don't think you can and unless it's destructive in some way-let him have fun with his balls!! A friend of mine had a German Shep and he was so crazy about having a ball, if he couldn't find one, he would find a rock and carry it around. He didn't do anything without a "ball" of some sort. He would whimper if he didn't.
