Expelling gas from the intestinal tract is a natural occurrence and a natural bodily function.
It is societal 'dirty minds' that have made it 'improper' to 'fart'.
If you must pass gas because you ARE in pain, just say 'excuse me', and get on with whatever else you were doing; in other words, pay absolutely NO attention to smirkers, teasing fools or other assorted childish behaviour that might be directed at you.

I guess it depends on the company you're in. If you're just around your family, then whatever. But I think the physical pain is easier to handle than embarassing yourself in front of a large group.
