went suddenly deaf in my left ear - just humming and some buzzes and ringing. told sorry, it just happens. been tested for tumors (brain MRI), plaque (mini-stroke), cholesterol, and other blood work. Had auto accident 5 months earlier but can't make a connection - wish I could because that would make my settlement better. Anyone else have something like this? Any other tests I can have done? Afraid of losing hearing in my other ear.

It seems I left out the fact that when this first happened I went immediatel to the ER and they did put me on steroids and Flonase - neither of which did any good. I have been to 2 different ENT's and where I was told the humming & ringing would subside in a month or so it has gotten worse. After all the tests both doctors are stumped and just tell me to come back in six months. I am very paranoid at this point about losing the hearing in my other ear.

My sister had this although not from an accident. I cant think what her diagnosis was called however she also suffered from dizziness and fainting.
An operation helped, however she is deaf in that ear.
Keep looking for a doctor who can diagnose you properly.

As the other Audiologist noted; most sudden sensorineural hearing losses are treated with steroids and have a mixed degree of recovery.

Regarding the car accident five months ago, it is highly unlikely that you would not have any symptoms for this long, then suddenly lose your hearing. Sometimes if an airbag deploys, there is noise trauma that causes some hearing loss (usually a temporary threshold shift), and sometimes there's enough air pressure to rupture an eardrum - but those have immediate effects. Was there any kind of head injury? If so, to what area of the head? Did they do any imaging of the inner ear structures? Again, even if there were some hairline fracture, the symptoms would have occurred much sooner than this.

As for the first response - her sister probably had Meniere's disease, and the treatment is to stop the Auditory nerve carrying faulty information about balance up to the brain. You do not mention any dizziness, so I doubt this is what you have.

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is more common than you think. It is essential that you seek treatment asap. Usually you will be treated with prednisone for about ten days. There is no guarantees with the treatment, but it can't hurt. About 1/3 of the people that have Sudden sensorineural hearing loss will get complete recovery of their symptoms, 1/3 will get partial recovery and 1/3 will not get any recovery from their symptoms. There have been studies that show that prednisone therapy as soon as symptoms appear is helpful - other studies do not support it. Regardless, go see a good Ear Nose and Throat doctor today. Good luck

Are you sure you didn't get hit by the airbag in your accident? I had an auto accident in December and I started having hearing problems right away. I now have a hearing loss in one of my ears. The airbag popped me in the ear. I had the same sounds you had..the humming, buzzing, sounding like the ocean.

Check again to make sure you didn't injure your ear with the airbag. I saw an ENT specialist and they say my loss is because of blunt trauma to my ear from the accident. It's quite possible that the problems you are having now are from the accident.

I have the same problems..I had a car accident in April, and had a buzzing noise in one ear for 6 months, then one morning I heard a popping noise and lost most of my hearing...I am doing testing..should know tomorrow...either a bone broke a nerve damage, but either way the doctor said he is sure it is due to the car accident...I have a costant buzzing in my ear as well
